When I started using Firefox a few years ago, I only transferred a handful of my most frequently used bookmarks and left the others sit in Internet Explorer. Since then I've switched to using Firefox exclusively, but the hundreds of old bookmarks left in IE kept bugging me until I decided that enough's enough and sat down and started going through them one by one, to transfer anything still relevant to Firefox and leave IE for good.

It turned out that this was for the most part an enjoyable trip down the memory lane, but every few dozen bookmarks I hit a website that I visited either frequently or infrequently, that's died completely. Some years ago, some recently, some at a date I can't even determine as the websites seem to have vanished without a trace - no web archives anywhere and search results coming up empty. I feel a little uncomfortable with every such dead domain I come across - a bit like finding out an old friend of yours has died years ago and you didn't even know it.

Which websites do you have fond memories of that are no longer online, or changed beyond recognition?

One that's got me stumped, because I can't find any information on it at all, is http://www.theheartofwinter.com

The domain is not even registered any more, but in my bookmarks I've had it marked as the community which has sprung up to replace Skullport after Sylvus shut it down (the old timers will remember what I'm talking about). From what I remember it looked quite nice and was very active as well. But now - not a trace of it left. Maybe somebody here knows something about it?

As an old timer, I certainly still remember Skullport and I remember Sylvus. It is how I found this site, via some site of Sylvus', and it seems years ago. So while it's a bit nostalgic, Tal, it's really awesome that your site is NOT among the "graves" from the early days. Sometimes the cream rises to the top. Good job. :)

I remember Skullport, but I don't remember the place that came after it. I occasionally run across dead stuff, but I'm not really one to frequent social places so it's mainly some tech info I wanted to remember, and I just search for a different place with the same info when I find the one I had bookmarked is dead.
