    This is a simple question that seems to get two different answers.

    When you get a huge welt on your arm/leg/wherever, is that the result of a bite or a sting?


    Ah crap! I was trying to make this into a poll and I slipped up again - its just not my day. :facepalm:

    I'm pretty sure you can add the poll afterwards to a thread, though I haven't done it myself.

    I would imagine such a thing would be th result of a bite or sting, but wouldn't you know it when it happened?

    Assuming the cause of the welt was a wasp (as indicated by the thread title) it is most likely a sting as most of the wasps that damage people do that damage with their stinger. It's not like their first "thought" is to eat you, it's to hurt you, either because they feel threatened or because they are just nasty (many wasps have that sort of reputation, you know, I guess it goes with being a wasp).

    Wasps sting, the 'welt' is caused by components in the venom which result in the body releasing histamines in the effected area, this causes the inflammatory response.

    I just wanted to mention that I know wasps sting. It's a HUGE pet peeve of mine when people say they bite, so I just posted a poll to see if anyone would bite :p.

    They shoot little laser beams from their ocelli / simple eyes.

    Although I suppose your wasps could be conceivably trained to cut down surgery costs in Homoeopathic Medicine.
