Does anyone have any recommendations about how someone can open an outlook e-mail saved as a .msg file without using outlook?

I found a couple of MSG Viewer programs costing around $50/user on the web but if anyone has any suggestions I would appreciate it.

I think Oppen Office.org can view/edit them as well, and it's still free (last time I checked anyway). But if all you need is a viewer, the link Tal gave should suffice. :rolling:

    Thanks for the recommendations.

The one that Tal linked to was one of the ones I was looking at. As it also happens to be the cheapest I guess I will recommend it.

Our department used Lotus Notes for e-mail because our previous audit software used a Lotus Notes database. Now that we have switched audit software they decided to switch the Canadian audit staff but not the U.S. audit staff over to Outlook.

For the life of me I don't understand why they don't just get the U.S. people a copy of Outlook to use to read any e-mails that we save in the audit files but apparently it is not going to happen.

Open Office is your friend, and yes it is still free. I liked it well enough... then my mom shelled out a bunch of money for MS office. I liked MS office a tad more, but compared with the price (or lack thereof) of Open office, it's only worth $10.

[IMG] JSBB, the page says it's freeware... meaning it's free (paying for it is optional). It doesn't get any cheaper than that.

But if you're intent on buying one, there are certainly much cheaper ones too. I've seen one for $20.

It is actually a demo version i.e. it is free for the first four uses and then you have to get a license.

I am bugging the technical services people to try to get an actual answer of why exactly it is that the US people can't get Outlook. Every time I have asked I have just been told that they can't. The more I think about it the less sense it makes.

I know they have Word and Excel on their machines so I can''t imagine that they don't have MS Office licenses. If that is the case, regardless of what the are using for an actual mail server, I can see no reason why they shouldn't just install Outlook.

Bah, that's not freeware then. Obviously some sites don't know the meaning of the word.

Looks like Open Office is your only really free alternative.
