Valor Mortis playtest is out and great litmus test for those tired of Souls-like games

The Valor Mortis playtest is happening as we speak, and the new first-person Souls-like game is incredibly striking, but a huge litmus test for people like me. If you're the type of person who made it so far into Elden Ring and then slapped the table going, "I'm good," after the dozen deaths within hour two of fighting a boss, never to return, then I don't think Valor Mortis is for you.

It is, of course, still incredibly early, and the playtest doesn't give its whole hand away. You wake up, and a ghostly Napoleon is clamouring for your help. The whole world looks as if it just came to a very gory end, as the linear paths and small zones that made up the playtest area are walled off by either debris or bodies. The world that Valor Mortis brings to life (even if everything is very dead) is incredibly striking.

It's often difficult to find the fine line between overtly edgy and genuinely bleak. While I'm not a huge fan of how it plays in its current state, I really want to be able to find the gusto to push through its combat to experience it fully.

Like when I highlighted it after Gamescom, it could simply be the swap from third-person action to first-person that could tip the scales. However, I'd highly recommend playing the playtest if you can get in, because it'll really give you an idea as to whether or not this game is for you.
