    [IMG] Hi all!

I just started with a gnome I/F. Can I change the Kit via SK to Ill/Kensai? Do I change the kit from "mage Illusionist" to Kensai simply, and this without loosing my spec. mage school?

    Thanks in advance

No. You can't make someone with two kits, and a mage specialty is considered a kit by the game engine. And even if you try to turn your F/I into a K/M, as you would if you changed the kit, you'll still lose the bonus spells (and opposition school) as you should.

What you can do however is simply create a Kensai/Mage and edit the spells slots to get an extra spell per level and don't memorize Illusion spells.

An illusionist that doesn't memorize illusion spells? Did you perhaps mean to say necromancy?

Actually, by editing him to a Kensai/Mage you'll keep the extra spell slots and get the added flexibility of using necromantic spells. When the game checks to see if a mage gets additional spell slots all it does is check whether or not the character has a kit. Try it and you'll see ;)

    @ Desuma Malevois:

I'd suspected that for a while; I'm glad someone else has noticed the same thing happening and that I'm not a) insane or b) in possession of a messed-up installation. :shake:

So you can add in extra spell slots then?

If Desuma Malevois and The Magpie are correct then you wouldn't even have to edit your spell slots... I've never tried but that's interesting, not legit but interesting nevertheless.

They are not correct, unless a mod or something has caused that phenomenon in their games or something is going wrong in their installation of the game.

    Sikret,

What I stated has always worked for me, through 5 years of playing BG2 and 3 or 4 different installations of it, including the period before I discovered the joys of mods. In addition, I originally discovered it by reading about it on another board, although I don't recall where exactly I found it now.

I just tried it out on my game. After changing kits I retained the bonus spell slots.

Sikret, have you actually tried it in your game? You may find that it works the same in yours too.

    Very strange, indeed!

Yes, I have tried it and it doesn't work (for me) in the way you described.

If it were that simple, I wouldn't have needed to make a mod to turn Imoen into a Conjuror; you could just SK her, or something like that. Obviously it works for some, but I wouldn't count on it.

I'm going to hazard a guess here. When I wrote what I did I had actually tried it on newly made characters, not NPCs. Could it be that, if you SK an NPC spellcaster, their spell slots won't be adjusted until their next level up?

Nope. Again, if that were so, there would be no need for the mod. The need arose from people who would SK NPCs and have them lose the bonus spells, and even after SKing extra spell slots, they would lose those too at every level up and have to re-SK them.

Maybe the CHR files are handled differently from the CRE files, I don't know. Maybe it has to do with starting as a specialist and changing, rather than the other way around. But the best advice at this point, with it working for some people and not for others, is to just try it and see if it works for you.

If you SK a dual class, it won't alter the number of spells recieved. It only does that when you SK a multi.

I also tried it on a newly made character and it doesn't work for me the way it does for you. (Not to mention that I think the way it works for you is not legitimate/legal.)

    Two questions:
    - Do you have the English version of the game?
    - Do you have both the TOB official patch and Baldurdash TOB fixpack installed?
