Instead of always trying to join bureaucratic, undemocratic and often times anti-freedom international organizations, why not simply enlarge the United States? The United States is the greatest form of governance ever imagined, we already have the perfect framework in place to let other countries and territories join us.

We could actively work over the course of the next few decades to build very close relations with other countries. If these countries agree to uphold the Constitution, protect freedom (free speech, bearing arms, freedom of religion, etc.) and maintain a democratic/republican form of government then there is no reason they shouldn't be allowed to join. Alaska, Hawaii and Puerto Rico have all decided to become American states, even though they aren't connected to the contiguous 48 states. These new states would be able to keep their unique culture, politics and identity, much like current states do.

Of course these countries wouldn't join the United States overnight, as we would first have to build very close relations with both their people and their governments, before holding a referendum on their entry into the federation. Countries that are already federations or have unique cultural groups in them could offer to join as several different states (i.e. each canton of Switzerland could become it's own state) if they wish to do so.

What do you think of this proposal? Which countries do you think are the best potential candidates for joining the federation? Do you think we should allow monarchic countries (i.e. Japan, Sweden, United Kingdom, etc.) to join or should we wait until they become republics?

Wow. Maybe because they are, y'know, already their own countries and probably think they're pretty cool without the need to join the US?

Or maybe because they think that they're actually better than us. They wouldn't want their educational standards to drop. They wouldn't want guns to be freely available like they are here. (Yes, I know that you believe that guns are the be-all for freedom, but most Europeans don't.)

Maybe because they think that our Constitution was a neat starting point but theirs is seriously better? Or because it would probably be a logistical nightmare to try to govern in real time across that many time zones, cultures and unique histories.

Perhaps they don't want to essentially have to choose between the shills put up by two political parties that, generally, are farther to the right than their most main-stream conservative political party?

Perhaps because they just don't think we're all that.

Nah, I think it's a great idea -- everyone should be a state. YMMV.

    * Last I checked, BTW, Puerto Rico was not actually a state.

Didn't look that great when the ludicrous partisan gridlock resulted in the US having it's credit rating downgraded.

Why all the polls anyway AD?

For the love of God, Arctic. You are on an international forum and, instead of trying to show any respect for the world around you or a modicum of intelligence, you keep posting these half-baked ideas where you think America should take over the world.

People like YOU are the reason the 90% of the rest of the world thinks that all Americans should be shot with their own guns and that the rest of us would be a Hell of a lot better off for it.

Next time you get the urge to post one of these moronic posts STOP. Think about what you're doing and then think are you about to, once again, prove the stereo-typed ideas that the rest of the world has about your nation?

I don't remember who it was that once said that a world government would give the world one single neck, for one single leash! But I like the idea of having somewhere to run if my own government becomes tyrannical.

Besides, seeing how much trouble the EU has getting Europe to work together across multiple borders, cultures, and languages, and the bloated "Eurocracy" that has resulted from the attempt, I don't fancy that particular mistake taken to a global scale.

There was a non-binding vote in November for statehood of Puerto Rico. It was the first time the majority voted in favor of statehood after ... what is it? Fifty years of voting. Clearly they are beating down a path to the doorway to statehood (neither is Samoa, Guam, the US Virgin Islands, or Saipan).

Are we sure AD is not a certain individual playing yet another prank on the boards? Certainly seems his style....

With the other thread, I thought he was just the best (or worst, depending on your perspective) example of the American stereotype. But now, I think he's just yanking our collective chains.

Plus in the other thread, T2 said AD sent him a very funny PM, so that convinces me even more. :D

[IMG] OK, enough with the sniping and instult-throwing. If you don't like AD's threads, just don't respond in them but if you do, keep it civil or we'll have to start deleting YOUR offensive crap.

I do not agree that the USA has the greatest form of government ever imagined. The mere fact of their ridiculously long winded presidential election process is reason enough to run a mile from wanting to expand it any further.

I wouldn't argue for the current strength of the Union, let alone suggest that other countries would want to join.

Harbs, we Get. The. Picture. You don't like the US election process. Got it. We're solid on that. Time to move on. There really is no need for any further clarification whatsoever.

I actually think this is a great idea! Let's all become states! In that way Europeans would gain majorities in both the House the Senate and most likely the Presidency and therefore we could instead change the entire political system to make it better and more European. Then we'd probably even get rid of those pesky long campaigns Harbs seems to have trouble with. ;)

Seriously though, I doubt most US citizen would appreciate the inclusion of a bunch of new states. It would also probably make the US more liberal than you'd like. I think we're all just better off with the current form of co operation. Even assuming this is a serious suggestion I do not think it's realistic enough to warrant much further serious discussion.

Switzerland and the United States have the most in common, compared with other states. We're both long-standing democratic states, we're both federations that were originally confederations, we both overthrew brutal colonialist oppressors, we both love freedom, we both love guns, we're both skeptical of international organizations, we're both right-wing, we both require all citizens be part of a militia, etc.
