I am of the opinion that the whole spiel about the Palestinian bid for membership in the UN was an overblown political affair, but this must take the cake: Israel speeds up settlements "in retaliation" for the UNESCO acknowledgement of Palestine.

Seriously? UNESCO? The guys who might decide that that mound over there is a valuable historical heritage site? They matter now?

This is starting to seem beyond stupid. Either some people in Tel Aviv have completely got bananas, or Mr. Netanyahu seems to be going WAY too much to ensure that every last Palestinian political group that DOESN'T hate his guts is laughed out of existence. Gee whiz, when you do your best to snub the political fraction that doesn't quite hate you, defund it, and do your best to sabotage the pseudodiplomatic initiative that it's based its domestic appeal on, who will come to fill in the void, junkies and monkeys?

*blink* There was a peace process? *blink* Like, in the last decade? All I recall is the Palestinians facing the US and Israel, both in unison demanding their unconditional surrender, while the Israelis built settlement after settlement on 1967 Palestinian land, only to be mildly rebuked by the US that they saw that with professed "concern" (that wasn't big enough to have any consequences whatsoever). Take that for 'honest broker'.

That thing that Mr. Mitchell tried to start, and that Obama, probably honestly, promised, was killed in the cradle by a coalition of Israel, their partisans in the US, and their man in the White House, Dennis Ross aka 'Israel's lawyer', causing Mitchell to quit in frustration. Netanyahu refused to talk to Mitchell because of his notorious, take that, even handedness. Netanyahu only talked to Ross. Ross referred to Israel as 'his people', no even handedness to fear there. Poor leadership by Obama. He should have forbidden Ross to take these calls that sidelined Mitchell.

And after those remarkable 27 standing ovations for King Bibi of Israel, Obama got the message to not try anything like that again as D's and R's are united in the urgent desire to express the most fulsome devotion for Israel. Oh the glory of the moment. The tail indeed wags the dog. The lobby had won.
