    ehhhh.... Oedipus killed his father at "trivia", then answer "trivia" of the sphinx? thus trivia = trivia? i know oedipus is greek, but then, that's my best guess.

    (guess this is the first time you see a person majoring biophysic and minoring classical studies and he is malaysian)

    It's Latin for three roads, liberally translated into crossroads, meaning commonplace. That, in turn, led to the slight alteration resulting in the present definition "of little importance" for the similar word trivial. The present use of trivia as a sort of useless knowledge contest is pretty recent.
