I've ran with the pre-generated 'canon' Bhaalspawn option (Abdel) before, playijng on core rules difficulty.
He's a decent enough character, but definitely sub-par when compared to a custom created character.
He starts off as a human fighter with a total stat roll of 83, which isn't too bad - i was a bit annoyed that using the book that adds +1 strength (he starts with 17) didn't seem to give him any kind of percentile strength at all though. :aww:
Another thing to note is that the way his stats are spread out, you won't be able to dual-class him into anything even if you pick up and use all available stat tomes in BG1.
I still managed to beat the game with him, the available companions were capable enough to cover the areas he was lacking in, and i had to put a bit more thought into how to put them to use during fights but other then that I didn't feel like it impacted my play style a lot when compared to how i'd play a self made fighter.

Since using one of the pre-generated characters doesn't impact the game at all dialogue or story-wise, I'm probably never going to give them another look again since rolling up your own character can give you a much more powerful character, and to me that's just more fun.
