According to the news at TheOneRing, The Hobbit is slated for filming in 2007. Here's what the news says:

The BIG news has finally hit. A Ringer Spy who was recently in the New York offices of New Line Cinema has reported that they clearly saw 'The Hobbit' on the film schedule for 2007. Here's what the spy had to say:
"Please leave my email anonymous as I have some very exciting news to report. I was in New Line's NY offices to discuss upcoming projects when I clearly saw something very intriguing on a year planner. 'The Hobbit' was clearly marked on what looked like July 2007. I couldn't exactly take a moment to investigate the calendar with my audience in the room, but it definitely said 'The Hobbit'. Lets hope this is a PJ project!"

Wonderful. Just what we need - another crappy book turned into a bad movie. Yes, I just said it! LotR were bad books!

:D I didn't like them, and I doubt the Hobbit will do much better, except for the dragon... that should be great.

You're definitely in the minority with that opinion... I can't wait for The Hobbit.

Tal has just outvoted you, Saber. :D

Well, make it two people. I'm not dying to see it, but I'm going to watch it when it comes out and I think I'm going to like it. ;)

Interesting. I'm eagearly waiting for the See No Evil sequel, but count on me to go see it.

LoTR pwned. The Hobbit will most certainly pwn as well. What about a movie based on the Silmarillion? (sp?) :hmm:

Not going to get my hopes up. Was slightly disappointed by LotR, so don't want the same thing to happen here. But then, the hobbit was that much better than LotR... but no! I'm not going to get my hopes up. Go expecting a bad movie then be pleasently surprised.

I always liked the cartoon movies of the Hobbit and LotR. However the new ones are still good.

I will definitely buy it when it comes out. I cut my teeth reading these books and they still are awesome. I think they did better than most movies in following the book, but they did change some things and leave out others die the length of the books.

well, now that we've all thoroughly dismissed Saber's demented cries, I too will take part in rejoicing! Huzzah! I hope Ian Mckellan is in again!

Mr Saber has a small point. The two Towers (movie)was not good enough. The books are not the best but stil fairly good. The age in wich they were written has something to do with it.

Lord of the rings is a piece of history that we moulded in our fantasy. Nowadays we see many pictures to guide us in our fantasy. LotR was the first, so the most pure, therefore we idealise LotR to a standard of its own. But crappy, MR saber, still earns a corrective slap. A rubber chicken will
    suffice.

peter jackson, no, done, let us see if a new talent can do it.

Yes, a very small point. Microscopic, in fact. Lord of the Rings rules, in print and on the screen. Into Mount Doom to anyone who disagrees!
