Thanksgiving and Family

    Here in the US it is Thanksgiving (and weekend) where custom is to be with your family (and be with you family Friday and Saturday or potentially go shopping).

    So we are all enjoying a few days extra off (unless you work someplace like Walmart).

    I think one of the best lines a sister of mine made this week was when she told me "Just because I'm wearing black doesn't mean I'm a ninja" or something very similar.

    So any other family events or comments others here or from across an ocean?

    This may end up in a different forum but there was an irony in one of the Thanksgiving football games being Cowboys vs Redskins but I want this to end up in a different category.

    Can't really comment much since we don't celebrate Thanksgiving in Europe, which is actually odd because we seem to have successfully imported literally every other (marketing) holiday, even though it makes no sense whatsoever here. This year Black Friday was the most obvious. You got an occasional store here and there putting up a Black Friday sale in the past years, but they were always an oddity.

    This year it seems that every marketing dept. in the country got a memo that Black Friday is now a thing in Europe as well, so we literally got bombarded with like 20+ daily mailings about BF sales from literally every online and physical store over course of the week.

    My sister actually noticed the same herself so we had a nice chat about just how retarded the whole thing is since nobody here even knows what the heck Black Friday is supposed to be (least of all the marketers promoting it), but any excuse to SELL SELL SELL is good enough. :shake:

    (For the record, I know what Black Friday means in the US, but to the general population here, it is a complete unknown.)

    There are actually several explanations, so it's anyone's guess which one is correct. But the one I heard most often is that it's supposed to indicate the point from where stores would not be "in the red" any more, but would start turning a profit until the end of the year. The Wikipedia article covers all the other origins.

    Sorry; that was meant to be a sarcastic comment on the increasingly commercial nature of US holidays, especially the ones near the end of the year :) I was in a store just before Halloween, and they had Halloween, Thanksgiving and Christmas crap everywhere :)

    I think Wikipedia defines it best with its categorization of "Commercial Holiday". There's never enough of those for the marketers all around the world.
