Does anybody have any suggestions on a replacement for AOL Instant Messenger's ability to send free SMS messages with a computer?

Most of the ones I've tried want my cell phone number and I really don't want to give it out as it gets interpreted as permission to use it for other things, especially for annoying ads or calls I do NOT want wasting data on my limited bare-bones plan.

AIM didn't need my cell phone send an SMS.

So any suggestions on such a service I can use while pretending I don't have a cell phone at all? AIM was good until they killed it after version 6 with the improvements of removing features and putting all that useless fluff in that made the interface supposedly prettier at the cost of efficiency. Still think version 4.3 was the best.
