[IMG] Yesterday I got up to the part where you have to fight your way out of Candlekeep through the catacombs. And, as you probably know, pretty much everyone you meet in the prologue reappears and turns into a doppelganger. So how long are you supposed to understand they were there for? When are you supposed to understand they infiltrated Candlekeep? Obviously the Gorion, Tethtoril, and Elminster doppelgangers came recently (with Koveras?). What about the other ones (Phlydia, Dreppin, Hull, etc.)?

I don't think the doppelgangers underneath Candlekeep had anything to do with Sarevok or his goons. After all, Sarevok really thought you to be imprisoned in the Barracks, and don't know you ain't before you arrive at the party in the Duke's Palace.
My guess would be that they have been there from even before Sarevok came.

But if they weren't Sarevok's minions, why were they there? And why would they want to impersonate Phlydia and Dreppin and Winthrop? When you go into the Iron Throne building in Baldur's Gate, there's a guard who complains about "people coming down [from Sarevok's office] with different faces". And you also have to investigate that merchant coster that was taken over by doppelgangers.

And in the prologue, did you talk to the real people, or did you talk to the doppelgangers?

In the prologue you did talk to the real people.
Now, I'm just guessing (as I can do no other thing). But, why would Sarevok set Doppleganger's to guard some catacombs in case you came by, if he where sure that he'd dealt with you? Now, as far as I remember, Doppelganger's can read your mind (or emotions), and set up who to impersonate when talking to you.
First of all: Why would Sarevok set a Doppleganger to impersonate Elminster, when he apparantly know nothing of your invlovment with this sage? Second of all, one could think that Sarevok might had actually recruited his dopplegangers from the hoards in the catacombs.

Perhaps he leaves it to the Doppelgangers to decide which person they impersonate. After all, the maincharacter does have some dealings with Elminster, and besides, the Doppelgangers will probably know it, if (s)he´s on to them if they read his/her mind and thereby come up with something quickly. They are, after all, infiltrators. They must be good at what they do...

The dopplegangers I assumed were to take the forms of the characters and kill the Iron Throne leaders, thereby laying the blame on you.
