Some movie franchises just keep going on well past their expiry date

I think that the key lies first in the time that goes by between episodes. Star wars were 3 In a row to tell one tale, and again 3 in a row to tell an other.

Indiana Jones 4 was a reasonable crossover movie. Exit Indiana, long live Mud. So parts 5 and 6 should focus on Mud.

Batman made a refresh what saved its character, again after a certain period of time.

The second part lies in the characters. In a new series you avoid the storyline of the previous. Replace all characters except two or three, if possible even the settings, so no Black Pearl in pirates 4. The black pearl should be sunk. No Barbossa, no undead monkey, perhaps only the fat crewmember and the false eye chap.

Refresh is with the action lessened and more story to set up one or two sequels. In case of Pirates an major first part would be the story of Sparrow getting a new ship and crew, then he sails of to stranger tides with a maximum of 3 story-lines spun.

Another that comes to mind is that damned Saw franchise. It seems generally applicable to most horror movie franchises actually, that either become cheaper or more exploitative.

Well, I don't think time is necessarily a factor.

For one, the Star Wars prequel were pretty apalling (and most would agree with me).

Indiana Jones 4 was also horrible.

Batman, while I am not a huge fan of the new ones, the are without a doubt infinitely better than the disaster that was Batman and Robin.

All in all, I would say it depends on talent. A good story, good acting and good direction might be able to reinvigorate a franchise. I would point to X-men First Class (which is awesome sauce) as an example, fairly recent compared to X-men Origins: Wolverine (horrid) and X-men 3: Last Stand (passable, but still a wash compared to the first two).

Regarding Pirates 4, I am of the opinion that Barbossa was the best part of the movie (which I thought was stale. And if I am not mistaken, most critics agree). And there WAS no Black Pearl. It was stuck in a bottle and was on screen for barely 2 minutes.
