[IMG] After eventually deciding on a thief I was stuck on deciding on which kit but the swashbuckler has not back stab and assasin gets only 15% so I stuck with a straight thief.
To the point has anyone else soloed as a thief if you have could any one tell me any tactics and or equipment you found good, my current location in the game is before I go to the asylum barely done any missions helping renal.

I'd go with Celestial Fury. It is really good for a thief to go in, backstab, have the enemy stunned, and either run or continue hacking away at him. The stun gives your char time to run.
As for Armour, I find the Black dragon lether armour to be very good, but only becase of the AC . If you aren't going to be doing very much fighting, go with Shadow Armour (okay AC [4] and +15% hide in Shadows.)
Also, The Amulate of Master Harpers gives somethig like +10 or 20 to open locks f/r traps, 3 to AC, And so on. That's in the expansion, though.

Celestial Fury is too damn really good for everyone, because it has no disadvantages at all. Dont touch this weapon, it is foul, go for dagger/short sword. These weapons make the game interesting, while the sheer power of the +3 katana (no, it does not have a personal description, so its katana +3) makes it fun for first 3 kills.

Perhaps you should think about a dual- or multiclassed fighter/thief. But there is a topic about that going already so you might want to check that one at www.sorcerers.net/ubb/Forum2/HTML/oo3150.html

For backstabbing you should in my opinion use a dagger or short sword for role playing reasons and with a succesful backstab you will do a lot of damage anyway so it doesn't matter that much with weapon you use.

As for armor I would go with the Night's Gift or Shadow Dragon Scales and later with the Bladesinger Chain.

I recently finished the game with my solo (straight) thief. He was a halfling (long live the short, fuzzy-toe folks) and had few problems finishing.

    His best weapons were:
    * CFury for melee and backstabing (note - I'm sticking my tongue out at all of the CFury haters out there) :)
    * Boomerang dagger (later Firetooth) for missile action. I also got the Gesen bow, but felt I got a better bang-for-buck with the daggers.

He also collected the three staves that summon fire, air and earth elementals for the *much* needed cannon fodder and the staff of Rhynn for thumping golems.

His armor was shadow dragon scale, speedboots, and strength girdles. He changed bracers throughout the game but mostly wore gauntlets of pickpocketing or one of the ones that help THAC0 and damage.

His most frequently used tactic was obviously to backstab from out of nowhere, run away and rehide, etc. Every once in a while, it made more sense to throw a knife, run and repeat. When all else failed, he could lay a pattern of traps out and lure the bad guys into them (usually with the dagger-throwing gig).

I had lots of fun with him and I hope you will with your solo thief as well.
