I believe monks can use wands such as summoning, cloudkill, fire, etc. These will you give you some area effects that add a lot to your ability to handle situatons. Can also use clerical and protection scrolls so get some restoration, etc into your backpack.
Don't use that dirty cheat of using Keldorn Firecam's armor.

stay in shadows as often as u can... its always nice to stand in the midst of ur enemys and take out their strongest member with a nice stunning blow, which u will get plenty of by the end of the game

take advantage of ur speed and stealth... hide in shadows, kill one. then run away out of sight, and repeat. do this to large groups of powerful people

    WHIRLWIND WHIRLWIND WHIRLWIND

i've beaten a game with only me and aerie with only a lvl 31 monk

Solo Monks (and all monks, for that matter) are very weak in the beginning, but gets very, VERY powerful later on. You should avoid quests that involves fighting against impossible odds, and do quests that require choosing the right thing to say, as it were.
If you plan to use a Monk I suggest you go get the Oversight mod (http://www.forgottenwars.net/?page=mods/oversight) to get new Monk High-Level Abilities.

Run from them. Nothing says you have to kill every monster who attacks you.
