    Hi,

I am in the process of learning of SQL. After that I am planning on learning HTML and than Ruby on Rails. I am trying to learn how become a software developer and I heard that these programs langauges are a good place to start. Any other recommendations.

I am also considering using my old Athlon for a server that will house the application I will develop while I am learning these programs. Does anyone have an idea on how to go about this and which OS operates as a better server.

    Thanks.

Well I'm not sure what you plan to develop. Websites? Applications? Kernel modules?

Websites: just a plain WAMP (Windows, Apache, MySQL and PHP) setup will do, although I absolutely loathe MySQL and PHP, these are still the best beginner tools and same the tools I started with.

Applications: Java and C#, again on a Windows server.

The technical stuff: use Linux and C.

For general programming: Learn Lisp and use this book.

    EDIT:
    Wrote a whole new comment.
