I have Icewind Dale, but never played it. I was wondering what the deal with the two expansion packs is? Is one a gameplay extender, and the other just improvments to the other two...or what? :rolling:

There's really only one "expansion". It brings new features to the game.

There's the "addon" called Trials of the Luremaster. It adds a new area; that's all.

And although Tal will disagree with me, there are little tiny differences in the sound and triggers inside the game with HoW installed. But it only plays at 640x480 on the original two disk version. HoW gives you 800x600 viewable, and upgrades the pathfinding, AI, and items found in the game. Some extra spells, and tweaks to all parts of the game, hence I say it changes some details. It really changes the whole game around.

It's worth your time to hammer though it, if you like D&D combat. It is combat intensive. There is a halfway decent story, as well.

I don't know what to tell you. Usually, I keep two installed copies on my computer. One pure IwD, and one with all the HoW stuff.

    Sentimental value. :)

It's one big castle. There's 3 "main" areas, but it really revolves inside a castle.

There's two fair sized dungeon areas. And a bunch of little "transient" areas that you just pass into and out of to get a single item or flip a switch.

A bit like dragon's eye; there's like, 4 levels, but it's really all dragon's eye.

There's some nice items they stashed in there, and TotL also serves as a patch. Version 1.42, which is the last patch put out for IwD.

For patching purposes, it's worth installing. Although, I don't really remember any specific problems that I had without it; there's a couple of whacky bugs, that are near random, that it closes but really nothing stability wise in the game.
