Another one! Every board just must have that "Doom 3" -topic :D

    This is what they say:

-- Some of the weapons are overpowered, or some underpowered.
-- Very good atmosphere, but gets repetitive after a time.
-- No replayability, and it is a bit short.
-- They have used those pesky imps too much.
-- ...But it is simply THE BEST GAME EVER because it is DOOM. :shake:

I thought I was the only one annoyed with the game because of the moronic need to switch from flashlight to weapon all the time since the game's so dark. But there's already a Duct Tape mod out there which fixes the flashlight on your machine gun. I'd like it on all weapons, however.

I'm only a couple of hours into the game, but thus far I'm disappointed. The game is next to nothing like the massive slaughterfest the previous two Dooms were. Consequently, it's also much less fun, as far as I'm concerned. It's like playing a horror movie, with lights going out all the time, monsters jumping at you from the dark, etc. And most annoyingly, you can't see anything most of the time. Not my cup of tea, but horror fans would love it I imagine. Still, I need to play it more before I can come to any final conclusions.

Forgot that... It should get better once you reach some "Delta" area. You should get to waste your excessive ammo there. ;)

I haven't spotted one overpowered or underpowered weapon yet. They all serve a purpose. The only thing I don't like is that it makes no difference where you hit. Even Resident Evil for playstation had ghouls die from headshots.

But what's good, incredibly good, is the lighting. The graphics really do look awesome. Every moving object casts its own shadow. I hear Carmack made the algorithm for the shadows himself.. gives you an idea of his genious. Also, typical to Doom / Quake, the playability is perfect.

I miss the mass-slaughter feeling you had in Doom 1 & 2 though, Doom 3 is attempting too much to appear like a horror game, without succeeding. Although some moments are rather surprising (turning around and seeing red eyes glow behind you shrouded in darkness, and then something jumps toward you and your screen shakes as you realise something inhuman is clawing at your face), most of the time it's just bunnyhopping with a shotgun along a boring tunnelwalk with a monster coming in every now and then.

The engine is good, it seems, if it can support wider areas than what are used in the game. Physics are nonexistant, you've been able to push barrels in games almost 10 years back. But the lighting effects with the incredible shadows and the relatively very low requirements to run it all smoothly, can make the engine ideal for good mods or other games in the future. The animations are also better than any I've seen in a game before, the monsters truly move like they should. They're not overly fluent or overly stiff, they're perfect, every step they make is exactly aligned with their surroundings and turning around etc is associated with the appropriate leg & body movements.

AvP3 with this engine? Man oh man, it'd be the game of my dreams.

Really? I've heard that some think it's too long given its repetitiveness.

What you heard was right. My spirits were high enough when I started on it and still after the first 3-5 maps I felt I'd already experienced it all (that's about 1 / 10:th of the way through, I think).

Like I said, lousy as a game but good as a playable technology demo.

    @ Abomination

Actually, the multiplay has been taking the most flak in this game. It is limited to 4 player deathmatch.

What is the ... story line? Are we still on Mars trying to kick Alien butt in an attempt to get home? Or is it something else? Like saving the world from Hell by going into hell itself and blowing it up from within?

Edit: Hahaha. Ok this is cute. I thought I deleted this post.

    Well gotta go on then.

Don't read if you don't want to know. Storyline coming:

Sadly, you're not the same guy you were in Doom 1 & 2. You're a new recruit to a science station on mars. Once you get there, you find out that something strange's been happening to people lately. Psychosis, hallucinations, weird accidents and power fluctuations in the systems. Soon enough you find your commander in the base, and embark on your first little mission. While on it though, all hell breaks loose. You're cut off from the main force, and learn that everyone is being slaughtered. As you try to follow the orders of your surviving commander, and find out what the heck is going on, you learn that the fate of the entire mankind is in your well-armed hands.

From what I read in PCGamer, basically you're an escort of someone to a Mars base where everyone's scared, and some mad doctor opens a way to hell or something. Loads of people die, and you shoot some nasties before going into hell to shoot some more nasties. That's about all I managed to glean.

Sounds good. Can't wait to see the "upgraded and improved" creatures again from the original Dooms. Although the Arch-Vile still sends me running far away.

I just played the beginning of the single-player, and it is ****ing mindblowing.

You get to the Mars station and everyone seems to be pissed off about having such a ****ty assignment, and there seems to be a lot of tension. The setting is pretty cool also, close to where you start out is a small restaurant/cafe for the workers to relax, with booty magazines and gamehog magazines on the counters. I don't want to give anything away, but right as you complete your assignment of finding the runaway employee all the hell stuff goes down.

What kind of system requirements are we looking at though? :D I think we might all want to make sure of that before we go buy it! :D

Radeon 9600 128 MB good to go? Or do we need something better?

I wouldn't buy it. Just heard that it uses similar system as System Shock 2 when it comes to monster-spawning. In other words: if you clear a room, turn your back for a second, and when you turn back it will be full of demons again. :nolike:
