[IMG] This might be a stupid question, but would he be considered an Undead creature?

Such as you would need Negative Plane Protection when you start to fight it?

    IIRC it does help.
It may even be absolutely necessary.
But I unfortunately haven't played in a month now so I could be wrong.
    Withdrawal setting in...vision blurring...

Not sure if he would be considered undead but negative plane protection, either from the spell or an item (amulet of power, mace of disruption +2) is a must. The shadow dragon's breath weapon drains 4 levels every time it hits.

I will mention as well that the duration of that spell is far, far too short -- you'd be better off with an item of some sort. You'd also be well advised to make use of traps -- you can set several around the dragon while protected by that stone that makes you invisible to him.

Shadow Dragon does not count as Undead, but as mentioned; the Negative Plane Protection spell protects against it's breath.

Another thing to do, would be to cast some Magic Resistance spell on yourself, or Spell Shield, or Immunity from [Spell School (Necromancy)].

Maybe, I'm not sure if the breath counts as a spell or not.
