    In my opinion he was one of the most important mainstream writers of our time, much like Rice, King and Rowlings. Although his work tended to be a bit uneven, even for mainstream writing. Nevertheless, he wrote some very good novels, which are not only reflected in the NYT Bestsellers Listing, but also his Hollywood portfolio. He will be missed.

    I was shocked when I saw this thread. I was not aware he was ill and fighting cancer. This is sad :(

    I am not a huge fan of all his books, but I will always have a lot of respect for some of them. His first novel, The Andromeda Strain, is the most realistic depiction of biological research that I have seen in any book or movie. It was such a pleasure to read a novel about my field of work from a writer who had actually done his work and read about his topic. The Great Train Robbery was always my favourite book of his, a very entertaining novel with a completely different style from his others, in which he showed a great sense of humour.

    He was an MD Ziad. That's why ER did so well too. The pilot of the show (where an extremely professional and organized nurse ends her shift by committing suicide) was based on a real nurse suicide that occurred during his residency.
