The story opened on the anniversary of the village's founding. As the villagers celebrated, the kids (including the young characters) heard the story of the village's founding from Michelson, the oldest resident.

He told how a band of rebels had left the vault and undertaken a heroic journey northwards, suffering many hardships in the unfamiliar surface, including battles against fierce mutated beasts. The supplies were running low when the site was found and the pioneers thought the village was a paradise.

The kids heard about the hardest times the village had faced, when a crazed band of raiders and mutants attacked, destroying everything with no apparent purpose. Michelson described the heroic defenders and showed the rifle he himself had wielded, as a boy of fifteen.

Michelson told of the times after that, of realtive peace. Of how the Vault equipment broke down and the village lost contact with the outside world, but were able to rebuild their identity as a hard, self-sufficient people.

Jumping forwards ten years or so.....

Caisimir, now a young man, has spent a good portion of time learning medicine in whichever way he can. One night, Giles, the owner of the neighbouring farm asks him to help with a pregnant Bhramin which seems to have gone into labour prematurely. He is able to deliver the calf, and while celebrating his success tells Giles his ambitions of working with the village doctor. Giles warns him that the politics of the village mean that all important positions are occupied by the mayor's extended family (a combination of nepotism and political marriages to make sure important families stay loyal). He explains that he has a talent for invention, showing some of his designs, but he was ignored for political reasons and his designs for improved irrigation pumps were "stolen". Caisimir offers to help him, but Giles doesn't think his plan will work. The two check on the calf and Caisimir decides to stay overnight to watch it.

The next day Caisimir and his father took the cattle out to the "common" pasture. They fought of a coyote attack, but in doing so accidentaly shot some of Giles' brahmin. This sparked an argument between Giles and Mr. Thornfire resulting in Giles storming off swearing he would have the Thornfires' farm.
