Being a newbie who has only just purchased SoA and ToB I though I'd look around for some hints on getting started. I've played BG1 a few times and loved it. Now I've been all over this site and was wondering what these 'kit' things are all about. As far as I can see they're sort of like a class within a class (e.g specialist form of fighter). Is this essentially what they are? Plus does anyone fancy giving me a bit more info on what benefits the different kits offer?

    Welcome to the boards.

It is fair to say that kits are sub-classes of current classes. Fighters, paladins, rangers, thieves, clerics, druids, and bards all have kits. Mages have schools, which are slightly different, but that was present in BG1 so you should be familiar with them. In addition, they have added some more classes. There is the wild mage, the sorcerer, the barbarian, and the monk. These classes do not have kits associated with them.

As for a description of all the classes and kits, you're definitely on the right site. Go to the main page of this site (sorcerer's place), and click on games, and then BG2. There are many hints and facts about the various kits that should answer everything you need.

Don't forget that any characters that you have kicking around in BG1 can be brought into BG2, where you will be able to select classes for them.

Ie, You bring a vanilla paladin from BG1 into BG2, you are given the option of leaving him vanilla, or changing him into one of the three paladin kits.
