    Hi

I was wondering what I'd loose creating a level 9 fighter and dualling him to a cleric instead of just having a pure cleric.

I'm aware of the loss of cleric kits, and I guess I won't get the symbol of x later on.

Would I be able to be fighter 9/ cleric 40?

Do I loose other goodies (beside some momentum on the Turn Undead feature)?

    Cheers

Shifting at level 9 you only lose one level of cleric. That's not a momentum killer (only being one level behind after you get powerful enough to actually turn tough undead is not a big deal).

What you gain is ability to have ***** in maces and hammers ... and get two weapon fighting (or ***** in staff and use the Staff of the Ram) ... and all the buffs from cleric.... Anyone who has been able to tolerate Anomen for the game knows just how powerful this combination can be.

If you really want the cleric kit you can get it (and the quests).

All clerics get a holy symbol when they reach cleric level 25, even dualclass or multiclass clerics.

You lose only one level if you dual your fighter at level 9, but even if you wait a bit longer, you'll still lose only a single level even if you dual at level 12. There's a helpful guide here on Sorcerer's, just scroll down to the bottom of this page and look for "Proficiencies per Level & Class by Ragusa".

I believe that lvl 13 was significant as well for fighters, not entirely sure why, though. Maybe an extra half attack per round? Can't remember. Don't know the exact level you can attain if you go to lvl 13 as a fighter, though. With lvl 15 fighter you can still get lvl 38 as a cleric.

Plus even if you lose the cleric kit (you can SK it in, if you want), you could still get the Berserker kit, which is a very good combination with the cleric dual class.

    /edit
I think the type of symbol is determined by your alignment if you don't have a kit.

I know you didn't specifically ask this, but you might consider taking initial ranger levels rather than fighter levels. Sure you can't attain grand mastery in anything, but it opens up the entire druid line of spells along with the cleric line of spells.

(I think if you are going to wind up all the way through TOB, you should make the character a multi-class rather than dual-class, but that's a completely different discussion.)

Thanks a lot for the constructive answers.

I've played clerics a lot and have always thought that the symbol I get was tied to the kit. Funny to learn new facts still.

I think I'll settle with level 9 fighter, the difference between level 9 and 12 is 750.000 xp, and I don't want to wait for that.

Now I just have to think closer on weaponry: With a level 9 fighter I can have 7* AFAIR, which means that I just can't get 5* in hammers or maces and 3* in dual...to bad. Maybe I should fokus on shields then.

Thanks a lot for the help.

Edit: @dmc: I'm going to use Spell Revision mod and thus I can't do as described :)

I'm pretty sure that after you unlock your fighter levels again, you'll be able to allot proficiency stars as you would to any fighter. Thus you needn't be confined to just the 7*.

You need ~250,000 XP for 9th level and ~1,000,000 for 12th (and if you're going to go to 12th you may as well go to 13th for the extra 1/2 attack per round). This puts you four or five levels behind a pure cleric which can be significant. You will also be waiting a long time before you gain your fighter skills back.

Once you exceed your fighter levels and get those skills back you can continue to put proficiency points in any weapon/style your fighter had. Note that if you put any points in these skills while a cleric, those skill points will be wasted (they just disappear).

I really think you should go for the dual class berserker9/cleric. that combo is really good. trust us, you won't regret it. the cleric kits aren't very good in my opinion. the best is probably stormshield ability, but you can get that as a spell with the spell revisions mod if you dual/multi as a ranger cleric

Is this the only cleric in your team? if so, then berserk9/cleric is probably the best bet becuase you will get more and higher level spells quicker.

if you have another cleric or druid, you should definitely go multi class becuase by the middle of the game as you enter ToB, multi's will outshine dual class. for example, with a ranger cleric, you can go into battle with ironskin and the enemies can barely scratch him. who knows maybe your next game. as you play you will understand more what we are talking about. cheers

Depending on your alignment you may want to wait until you have dualled before going to the Temple District. As a Cleric your alignment determines which temple will give you the Unseeing Eye quest. I don't know what will happen if you accept the quest as a Fighter for the Temple of Helm and then have to complete it as a Cleric for another temple.

Another comment about proficency points; the grand mastery in BG2 has been toned down and may not be worth spending points to get to ***** (you can get the grand mastery fix, which is great, but then your enemies also get the fix). Also, some consider the addition of proficiency points to fighter skills after dualling to be a bug. I've heard of mods that take this away (but then those might have only been rumors).
