I have to say I agree with most everything Carter says about Bush. But really, Carter wasn't such a great prez himself....

Well, now - Jimmy didn't do anything overtly wrong... he just wasn't really strong enough to get the right things done at the time...

The guy struck me as a little out of his depth as CinC, and never really hit his stride until he left D.C.

But, for arguably the most meek president (c'mon, he was attacked by a RABBIT, while in a boat!) to come out so clearly against 'Chancellor Palpatine', that says something.

Well, iirc Carter has never been especially supportive of Bush, so little new there... Mind you, he has a bad record of wrong judgements, so Bush could take solace there.

If he cares, that is. POTUS Bush hasn't shown a lot of willingness to take dissenting opinions to heart, and I doubt he will do it now.

Tim Wilson is a comedian/songwriter, mostly in the country circuit. That quote was from 100 Things Every Man Needs to Know to Survive.

Actually, I agree with everything Carter says in the article. He really attacked Bush's weaknesses. I tend to agree with Truman's assessment of Presidents -- the worst president is the one who does nothing. By that standard, I think Carter will still rank in history as worse than Bush -- with the caveat that his work on human rights after his presidency mark him as one of the best 'former presidents' in our history.

What an absolute disgrace. Carter shows a complete lack of class in criticizing Bush; and Blair for that matter.

I wonder how much of this is that he is hoping someone will be declared worse than him before he dies.

I fail to find anyone that have actually been worse than Bush. Not a single one. Hell, even that fool from the turn of the last century apologized for his ****.

I agree with what Carter said. It is surprising that he said it and doubt that Bush will pay much attention to it.

However we do have an election coming up and politicians are going to be speaking out.

[IMG] Ahm. Uhm. What's the news? Did it need Carter saying that to notice?

I mean, he's absolutely right. But it is 2007 now. Carter said about the same last year, the year before and the year before and the year before and the year before. Just a point.

I found remarkable the performance of another good man, Ron Paul, for what he did 'in the lion's den', the GOP convention where he dared speak out truth aloud there. I saw the debate and I had to swallow hard when the moderator simply changed topic after Giuliani's asinine remark on Paul's correct statement. And it sure demanded courage to vote against the Iraq War in 2002, especially in with-us-or-against-us GOP under 'The Hammer'. How many congressmen had the spine to do so? He's my hero of the week.

    :jawdrop:

That's some shocking news to me, I don't think I've heard of that before. Thank God (pun intended) this is Bush's last term (right? :bad: )

I dunno...there's still plenty of time for something catastrophic to assail the United States, forcing the current administration to put forward some kind of 'Emergency Powers Act' that extends the term 'for the duration of the crisis'...or is there (dusty and unused) legislation like that in place already? I'm just a furriner. ;)

You mean OTHER than Iraq, Plame, Katrina, and Enron?

None of those actually compare to Teapot Dome or Watergate for that matter, while only what happened with Plame could be surely considered a scandal. SEC's handling of Enron blew over pretty quickly and no different from the precedent set by Reagan (who had some real nasty tricks to help out corporations). Teapot Dome involved the U.S. Secretary of Interior being bribed (millions by modern standards) into giving Mammoth Oil a no bid contract and access to the Navy's oil reserve.

Iraq really doesn't really differ much from Vietnam in terms of mismanagement of a war. The two wars are surprisingly and frighteningly similar. Apparently its too much for Bush to try to figure out how NOT to repeat that war.

Katrina was inexcusably bad, but it's hard to say it was worse then the Iran-Contra, propping up the Sheik, Saddam Hussein, General Pinochet (and the other dictators we propped up in South America; thanks Nixon and Reagan), or Heaven forbid, Harding, Coolidge and Hoover's such utter incompetence that it looked as if they where trying to start the Great Depression. Then there where the lies about the missile gap... Also Reagan's presidency suffered the largest economic recession since the Great Depression from 1982-84 and created the United States' current problem with the national deficient.

Honestly the only way I could say that Bush was a worse president then Nixon would because Nixon opened up relations with China and got us out of Vietnam (after initially increasing the resources being spent on Vietnam). As for Reagan, don't get me started, the man consulted astrology, freaking astrology, on some the policy decisions he made. Honestly what did Reagan do? He increased military spending, increased the national deficit, was implicated in the Iran Contra (but luckily had a mid-ranking officer take the fall), restarted the Cold War and ended in his style, destroyed unions as both a political and economic entity and supported ultra right wing dictators in third world countries.

No, Bush is an epically bad president, but he was a couple of his fellow Republican presidents he has to push his way through first before he can claim that title as the worst.

Well, I'd have to say starting a war based on false pretenses and then lying to the entire world about it qualifies as being rather substantially worse than Watergate. Nixon never killed anyone. How many have died in Iraq so far?

C'mon; damn near every president over the past century has backed, to one degree or other, repressive regimes in Latin America.

And let's not forget that Pan American Petroleum got access to Navy's Elk Hills field.

But...this was fully legal under the General Leasing Act of 1920.

Mind you, how the government could get to such a situation is a rather unfortunate, but that's how politics works - people get other people to do things the latter people don't want to.

Senator Fall (what an apt and prophetic name, tho :) ) was quite proficient in this - he got appointed as Secretary of the Interior, he persuaded the Secretary of the Navy to transfer jurisdiction of these fields from the Navy to the Dept. of the Interior.

It was the taking of 'gifts' exceeding four hundred thousand dollars from the presidents of those oil companies that was Fall's actual crime.

He may have been the first presidential cabinet member to go to prison for his actions while in office, but I'd think that mere bribery and government corruption pales to outing your own spies, mismanaging disasters, and starting wars on apparently false pretenses.
