I just finished SoA for the first time with my pure mage, my was it good. I did however install ToB which gave me Watcher's Keep, which I took on in Chapter 2. Meaning I came out of it, as tough as it was, with all these extra super-tough weapons.
But even excepting for those, I noticed almost all of the best items in SoA are given fairly early on...that is Carsomyr, Red dragon armour, shadow dragon armour, flail of the ages, cel. fury...need I continue?
You can count on one hand the good items received after this...at least the ones worthy of note...the Wave halberd, Crom fayer (sp?), blackrazor and the silver sword. Beyond those few, I think the items found early on are much better than the stuff picked up later. With Watcher's Keep you also get Staff of the Ram which is truly great 1D6+10!! My mage hits as hard as a warrior.
Maybe these items should have been better spread out?

I agree, too much of the game is crammed into chapter 2, and this includes weapons as well. I guess you could wait till you finally get out of the underdark, but everyone will take the opportunity if it's presented, and those weapons and experience gained help a lot in the following parts of the game. Almost all of my major equiptment was found in chapter 2, and for me that was the longest chapter as well.

Heh, never played a straight mage, I'll have to try that sometime. Are the smaller number of spells that you can cast per day made up for by the variety? I would usually take a sorcerer over a straight mage, but I see how they could be powerful. I just really like sorcerers because you have the ability to cast any spell you know at any time. I really don't know if you can cast that many more per day as a sorcerer though. Anyone got a chart?

    [IMG] Hi,

Yes, as a sorceror you can cast more spells than a mage, even a specialised mage. The charts are in the manual and on the sorcerors web site (not sure where, link?)

Congratulations doing watchers keep in chapter 2 kingsgambit. Is this your first time through SOA?
I am interested whether you felt it made the later chapters a lot easier because of all of that great stuff and xp?

I had considered attempting watchers keep in chapter 2 as well with a later party but I was worried that I would exit there at too high a lvl and with too powerful kit so that the later chapters might become a little too easy.

    Cheers,

    Hey ,
I'm saving Watcher's Keep for Chapter Six. It'll give me something to look forward to later in the game (I'm in Chapter 4 right now)

This is my second full time through the game, but in my first time, I actually FORGOT to do Watcher's Keep! I mean, it's tucked away in that little corner of the map I almost never look at, so yes, I forgot to do Watcher's Keep! And by the time I did remember, it was too late. There I was, watching the ending credits, feeling smug about myself, and suddenly I said: "Oh shoot, I forgot Watcher's Keep!" By then, I didn't want to do the last battle again, so I said "Forget it, I'll do next time!"

Mainly I agree that the item placing in SoA is a little weird: You find that many great weapons and items in the game that you hardly need to buy some and are very well equipped *soon* ..... after the underdark the only weapon that is too late to be of real interest is the warblade *sigh*
