With the impending death of Arafat (I don't think there's much real debate on it), it comes to mind that there is great potential to make things work (especially with Sharon acting to pull settlements already), but there is probably greater potential for disaster.

With no true successor around, I am rather afraid that the death of Arafat will result in some chaos and that Hamas, Hezbollah, etc. will ramp up their activities against Israel.

Israel will then almost certainly decide that these new attacks need to be dealth with in kind and we can expect a new escalation. Only this time, I expect Israel to really take the gloves off and do a serious number on anyone they think is related to Hamas and the other organizations. That will certainly not benefit anyone, least of all Israel and, obviously, not the innocent Palestinians that will be killed (note that I don't give a rat's tush for the Palestinians that actually engage in the terrorist activities, whether they be brainwashed innocents, fervid believers or cynical manipulators -- if they were all struck down by a plague tonight, it wouldn't be too soon for my liking).

Please tell me I'm wrong and it will all work out.
