This realy depends on the situation.

Abidalzims is your nice "all situations" nuke. You can also put it into a contigency, thats probably the most convenient about it.

Abi Dalzims simply is your best friend.

Dragonsbreath is more of a tactical tool, the area effeckt knockback paired with some nice (but not overwhelming) damage is always handy inboss fights. Toss that thing into the line of casters/fighters and laugh when your contigency triggers the abi's.

Which one is better? For general massive damage purposes throw around abis. To get control of a fight, dragon breath them.

Comet is nice too. Tossing roids at enemys, how cool is that?!

IIRC Dragon's breath IS party friendly, so just blow it whenever, wherever you want.

With contigency or time stop (with improved alacity or not), you can hit as many as you want with Abi, but DB.....well it knocks enemy out.

I would say Abi Dalzim's Horrid Wilting.

I know...Dragons Breath does more damage on average, as well as bypassing MR AND knocking back enemies.

However, ADHW is a lvl 8 spell, which means more TIme Stops for you. I HATE using lvl 9 slots for damage spells, when I can use stuff like Time Stop and Improved Alacrity, not to mention Summon Planetar. Secondly, ADHW being lvl 8 can be put into Chain Contingency! This is SOOOO awesome! In my latest run with a FMT, I cast a CC with 3 ADHWs, and luckily enough, 2 managed to get past Demogorgon's MR, and he even failed the save on one!!! :o

    I love ADHW...way more than Dragon's Breath.

Dragon's breath does have a casting time of 3. Which is pretty good.

I used to prefer dragon's breath when I learnt it ignores MR and I killed all the demi-liches with a single dragon's breath.

But I think dragon's breath does some kind of fire damage. There are people immune or have very high resistence to it. There is also no way to bring down that resistence. On the other hand you can bring down anyone's magic resistence. (well, except demi-liches) So... I guess Abiz is still better.

And... Demigorgon has 90% MR so...

Demigorgon is completely immune to any fire damage. (e.g. dragon breath) And Since Demigorgon has 90% MR, the chance that two Abiz hit him consecutively is 1%. Once in a hundred tries. So it's kind of point less to CC 3x Abiz.

It's much better to put in CC three pierce shield, then throw Abiz and other spells.

I prefer ADHW, because its damage grows as you gain levels. Plus, it does pure magic damage, not elemental. And I prefer Comet over Dragon Breath, beacause it has also a stun effect, wich is more useful than knockback. Plus, there's no saving throw against Comet. And one encounters more enemies with good saving throws than with tons of magic resistance. You can always use Sunfire for those. :)

Dragons Breath does 20d10, comet only does 10d10.

DB has a save vs. to do half dammage and not be blown back, so it effectivly does 10d10 with the save or 20d10 and blown back without it.

Commet has no saving throw against the dammage, but there is one against being stunned for 1d4 rounds.

    Both ignor MR

so, both do 10d10 without save, and the only difference is (extra 10d10 dmg + blown back) vs. (knocked out for 1d4 rnds) if the save is not made.

For this reason I would probably sugest that Dragons breath is better, exept whilst fighting fire resistant foes. Also Dragons breath has a casting time of only 3 as opposed to 9 (for commet)

I would think Comet has more tactical nuking use, rather than mass bombardment...which is what DB is good for.

The interesting thing is that ADHW is good for both purposes... :D

It is 10D10 GUARANTEED damage not counting the save. If you DO count the save its 20D10.

However, most enemies in ToB tend to make their saving throw...atleast the bosses do...so takign 10D10 is a way of equating it with the most like scenario.

Comet doesn't ignore MR. (that's why there is a mod that makes it ignore )

And Comet also has a casting time of 3. (I'm guessing the mannual says 9, but the manual is full of mistakes. there is no way it takes 9, nobody will use it if it is )

I prefer using Dragon's Breath: Using Abi in TOB is only effective in Chain Contingency, so my sorcerer can use it only three times(there are only 8 Abi's in her spellbook), but with Dragon's Breath, it's possible to use it up to five times (last spell left for Wish).

Of course, both are good (bread and butter of TOB mage spells). It's nice to have a sorcerer, Edwin, Irenicus and, say, Imoen in a TOB party, all of them fire their Chain Contingencies and Dragon's Breaths. :)
