Can I do this when I first meet him or do I have to wait till he get his body back and right before he goes ape?

As I recall you have to get all of his body parts, summon him, and then pickpocket him. You have a super short opportunity to do so before he turns hostile.

Kangaxx won't appear before you have gotten him all his body parts, so you can't pickpocket him before that. He will auto-talk to you as he spawns, but you have a short window in which it would be possible to pickpocket him.

Or you can force talk to him as he appears, locking him in place for another round or so.

Or you can just use the scroll of protection against undead, in which case he will just hang around until you actually force talk to him. This is what I usually do. Except I don't normally pickpocket him - I think the G3 fixpack or whatever fixes being able to get two rings of gaxx off of him this way anyway. The best part about this way is that you can just wail on his demi-lich form with impunity because he won't attack you at all.

Or you could avoid the whole hassle and just use the console to give you an extra ring.

I have an odd rule where it has to be a part of the game, even if it was not intended. That gives me some level of control over making the game too easy.

But..... I think I missed the first part of Equalizer. So, I might make an exception. How easy is it to use console to type the codes? If there is any danger that could be inlolved I don't want to do it.

Does anyone know if the official patch prevents you from getting two gaxx rings?

The official patch does NOT. Baldurdash and its successor the G3Fixpack can remove the exploit. You have the option of installing everything or picking and choosing what to fix. Most just go for "install everything".

Honestly, I prefer using ShadowKeeper to bring items into the game. It has a handy interface and doesn't require you to keep a bunch of codes straight. I also prefer that "if" I'm going to tweak things that I actually have to go out of the game to do it. I don't ever want to be tempted just to use the console any ole time I get into a bind, and so I almost never enable it. That's just me. If you're interested, ShadowKeeper can be downloaded from the BG2 section of Sorcerers Place.

I've been playing with the official patch since forever, and I've never had a problem getting two Rings of Gaxx.

Could you explain a little more to me about ShadowKeeper? Could I use it to give myself more boots of speed and the equalizer? I figure boots of speed won't break the game just speed it up.

Really all I want to do is get 5 more Boots of Speed and an Equalizer. Could someone be kind enough to tell me step by step what I need to write into the control command? I think I get everything else but I don't want to screw up the game by messing up a code.

I think you go CreateItem("boot1") is that right? If someone could just tell me exactly wat to type here and what to type into the program files to debug everything.

Doesn't knowing everything about the game including where every magical item is and even exploits on how to get extra ones ruin the magic of experiencing the game? Isn't finding a nice magic item better than knowing what and where it is and simply planning on how to most quickly get it?

    It can be downloaded here

    A quick explanation is here:
Shadow Keeper is an application that allows you to edit your Baldur's Gate II (and ToB) saved game files. How the editor is used is really up to you. Some people use editors like this for beefing up their characters, some use them for recreating actual D&D characters to play in the game and some just to goof around. The point of the editor is to allow you to have fun playing the game however you like it best.

One thing to keep in mind, if you haven't already played through the game and you plan to make supermen out of your party members, you will most likely kill most of the fun of the game. A game without challenges grows boring fairly quickly.

There is a read me with it that tells you how to install, but essentially you just extract the files to your BG2 installation directory. Then you launch Shadowkeeper, and select the save game that you wish to modify. You can do all manner of stuff with this tool... give items, change stats, alignment... make your characters immune to damage. Use with caution, as you can definitely cheat the fun out of your game.

When you make changes, Shadowkeeper will make a new save game file, so your previous file will always remain intact. Go back to the game, load the modified game file and you're pretty much done. It's a good idea to double check that things are working okay before continuing the game. If it's an item you added, be sure to equip it to ensure that it behaves as expected (sometimes there's more than 1 copy of an item in the ShadowKeeper database, and sometimes one of those items is the "correct" one, and the other one might not be equippable, for example).

It's a fairly intuitive little app. It's also what I use to change Bioware PC's classes.

Since it's your first runthrough of the game, I implore you to tread lightly with such a tool, so you don't ruin your experience of the game. Wait until you're on your second (or third) playthrough before trying anything more dramatic.

And yet now you want boots of speed too.

Nothing will actually break the game. But as others have pointed out, it makes things easier. And make no mistake - 5 boots of speed will make things much easier - you'll be able to easily out-run enemies, position your party tactically, etc. If all you want to do is speed things up, IIRC all you need to do is adjust the framerate.

I realize that you're powergaming, but unless you're installing mods to make the game harder (SCSII, for example), you're kinda ruining the experience. Not to mention what BTA points out - half the fun (especially on a first run-through) is discovering new items.

On the other hand, I find it quite annoying to miss the good items too (also especially on a first run-through). This is also one of the factors to the restarter problem for me.

I tend to feel the same way - what I typically like to know is that there is, say, a really cool sword in the general area of X, without knowing too many specifics. That's quite different from, say, knowing that there is a pair of boots that make you move faster, and rather than going to look for them, I'l just console them in, and while I'm at it, I'll console in extras for the rest of my party.

I should make something clear - I'm nor criticizing Heisenberg. It's his game and he's free to play it the way he wants. I just think he's missing out on a lot of the fun with his approach (but then again, his idea of fun might differ from mine).

... unless it also happens to involve riding a toboggan at breakneck speeds while wearing moose antlers and pushing a curling stone with a hockey stick. Eeh.

I understand everything you guys are saying and I really don't want to break the game. I swear it would stop at the boots of speed and I would not want anything else. I just hate having to wait for the rest of my party and if its safe to add the boots I kinda want to do it.

Here is the thing, I am going to be honest. This game can be kinda hard for me. I really love that and its the reason this has become my favorite game. I have OCD so sometimes I can get a little crazy with trying to make my party awesome. It is my understanding Boots of Speed would only allow me to better position my party and give me a little room to make mistakes. If this is not the case I will not do it. It also has to be safe. If its safe and I can add the boots without doing anything else I think I want to do it.

I would also like to add, I don't quite see it as power gaming. I like to max out my party within the limits of the actual game. Since, it is possible to get more then one boot of speed and it won't make the party uber I try and look at it as free DLC. Which usually makes the game easier but is within the limits of the game. If that makes any sense.

If you want to do it, then go ahead. You'll be accomplishing exactly what you want to accomplish.

Well, that's more or less the definition of powergaming (or at least one definition). And don't get me wrong - I'm more of a powergamer myself. I just admit it. :p

Except that it's not within the limits of the game; there are only a limited number of boots of speed - I forget how many exactly, but certainly less than 6. Using that rationale, any item cheated in could be viewed as a free DLC.

    Not really. :p

There are a finite number of boots of speed in the game. Part of the game is figuring out how to allocate scarce resources to maximize your parties' impact. By giving out extra boots of speed, you are avoiding that issue and giving your party an advantage that the devs didn't want you to have (or they would have made 6 pairs available).

Also, to cheese an extra ring of Gaxx is powergaming and exploiting the engine. Kangaxx is one of the toughest fights around and the reward is certainly worth it. By artificially doubling that reward, and by using a game exploit to do it, you are breaking the game. Maybe not by much, but you are.

That all being said, it's your game so do what you want.

    Edit: Semi-ninja'ed by Splunge.

Actually, I didn't know this but apparently if you do the Thieves' Guild quests, you could filch a pair of boots of speed off of Renal Bloodscalp. In which case there would be precisely 6 boots of speed in the game.

As for using shadow keeper or the console to get the Equalizer - if you have the blade and hilt already, but just missed the pommel gem in chateau Irenicus, you could just SK the pommel gem in. That way you'll still have the satisfaction of having Cromwell make it for you.

Except that you can't really get to 6 pairs until most of the way through TOB, when the boots really don't help you all that much tactically. I think that, even with the Renal pair, you can't get more than 3 pairs in SOA.
