    For the first time, I'm going to have a character with a familiar. Any of the others either chose not to have one or the familiar was KIA.

    How do I go about rolling up a familiar for a mage? I know to use the base stats in the MM, but then what? I chose an owl if it makes any difference.

    Familiars are described on pages 52 and 53 of the 3.5 PHB. But the basic idea is;
    -they get half you HP
    -they are treated as having the same HD as you (doesn't affect any of there abilities though, just for HD based spells and effects, things like sleep)
    -they use your base attack bonus with their ability score (Dex or Str, whichever is greater),
    -they use your saves unless the base animal has better ones
    -their skills are same as saves, whichever of you has the better mod
    -they have improved evasion
    -they get certain special abilities based on your level, best to look those up in the PHB
    -everything else, move speed, size, whatever is covered in the monster manual
