What are peoples opinions on the experience points patch? is it necessary? I like to play RPGs unmodded the first time, but i am wondering if i should use this.

I don't think it's necessary. You may be overpowered by the end of the game with the mod.

If you play the game without XP mod your party members will reach level 2 quite fast because of quest XP, but it will take eternities to get the level ups afterwards since you hardly get any XP for fighting for a long time.
So the numerous long-lasting, repetitive fights against the level 1 monster groups will be a struggle every time and you'll encounter many enemies on the huge first level where you don't stand a chance and have to mark this location on the map to return later when you're more experienced after an eternity. And then just reload until your cleric gets a lucky roll for being able to turn undead 4 levels higher.
When the first levels of the dungeon are finished after a long, long time the XP progression becomes normal and the problem is gone.

This is just my experience from playing this game unmodded.

The XP patch might have been useful, but there's a patch which I missed even more, the speed patch.
It should handle the biggest problem without even changing the in-game mechanics.
It's quite unbearable if you have to spend half an hour watching one enemy after another moving slowly towards your party and attack during their surprise round before you can even start the battle.

Hmm... I didn't find this game all that hard at all... So, I wouldn't think the XP patch necessary at all... unless you want overly powerful characters.
