    I don't think most people characterize every pot smoker as a loser; lots of them are losers, so I understand the stereotype. But take music for example, tons of people love music made by pot smokers and they willingly acknowledge that the music they listen to is made by druggies. (Myself included)

    Losers are losers; pot smoking may attribute to it at times, but it's easy to be a loser without pot too. Smoking pot is not required to be a loser. Being a loser is not required to smoke pot. One can be both or neither, and it is my general experience that most people agree with me. Obviously everyone does not, but you get my drift.

    I think some type of altered mental state is almost required to make compelling music. It doesn't necessarily have to be drugs though. Being manic or depressed or just generally crazy/unstable can do it too.

    The same may be true for other forms of art as well .... you'd think Bosch would have to have been more than a little crazy to paint some of the things he did. Or maybe he just smoked pot.

    Somehow I doubt that old Abe was a full blown stoner. He accomplished a lot in his life. Many recreational users of pot do the same, and good on them. But it is also true that a lot of pot smokers are so into it that they cannot function properly in society. To equate Lincoln to them is not a reasonable comparison.

    There's also been quite a bit of unnatural selection when it comes to pot, so I'm sure whatever old Abe was smoking was a lot less potent even than crap bought on the street today, let alone what people get from higher end suppliers.

    I think a fairer statement would be "Only losers are substance abusers". I don't think I ever met an alcoholic or frequent drug user that I didn't think was a loser.

    Guys, Abe didn't just say that he smoked pot, he also clearly stated that it was one of his *favourite things*. The dude was a self-admitted stoner. If I said 'One of my favourite things is lying slumped in the alley shooting a syringe of heroin!' (edit: This is hypothetical, you farking out-of-content quoters you :p), you'd label me a drug abuser, not a user.

    It's funny that something an American national hero once did would now earn you jail time in the U.S.
