What would be considered to be an average user/exchange speed for online play I've got iinet (australian isp) and they ended up giving me a naked adsl voip connection. At about 6.8 Mbps I've tried SWAT 4, NWN1, and crysis and averaged around 250-450 ping on the first two and crysis was just unplayable even though my computer can generally run it ok in single player. tried a speed test of my connection to some australian site, and got a about 5000mbps.

The ping time and your download/upload speeds are different.

The ping can be thought of as a response time, so the longer it is the more lag time there is from your local actions and the server you are connected to recognizing your actions, and from changes on the server to the changes being reflected on your screen.

If your download/upload speed is low, that could also introduce similar lags if there is a large quantity of data that needs to be moved between you and the server to get the updates.

Ok, thanks for the explanation. Now, what can I do to get a faster connection, besides upgrading the speed or moving house?
