Though I've played BG1 along with BG2 for years, I've never experienced these in BG1! I mean, a dialogue window opens up and the NPCs actually talk with each other. I always thought it was in the sequel only.

Xzar:- HaHAR there, Montaron! Quite the fight, eh chum?
Montaron:- My "equal" is a talent of many men: all of them fools.

I have no mods, just baldurdash fixpack...

There are a few of them. Khalid and Jaheira talk a little. there are a few things that go between Minsc and Dynaheir. There are a few combinations of three that will talk...But they are a lot rarer and much more random in their occurance than in the second one.

They spent money on a story instead of scripting lines for the NPCs. One of the ways BG is better than its successor. I won't be in the middle of smacking down Mulahey and have Jaheira start yakking at me. :p

For more NPC interactions, you need to mix up the party. Jaheira, Khalid, Monty and Xzar might duke it out; Kivan and Viccy snipe at each other; Eldoth, Skie and Garrick have a love triangle going.

If you want more banters - also in middle of fights, the BG1 NPC Project is the way to go. Loads and loads of banters

BG1 NPC is for Tutu/BGT only.

There were only a few brief banters played as sound files in BG1, as was mentioned above. Due to the way the engine handled variables they could repeat if you loaded your game, too.
