It's ridiculous IMO. It just seems like one more way for politicians to talk out of both sides of their mouths.

If you need to hide your representation from your constituents, are you really representing them?

Of course not! Politicians don't want representation, they want taxation and "representation" without real representation.

It seems to have been like this for many years:

I really hope the GOP can take the Senate in 2014 so these types of practices can come to an end.

    http://taxprof.typepad.com/taxprof_blog/2013/07/senate-.html

^^ "The unusual tactics speak to the high stakes of the so-called blank slate approach to tax reform Baucus and Hatch are pursuing. They’re starting from scratch in their pursuit of a new tax system and they’ve given their colleagues until Friday to explain which tax provisions should stay on the books.

"That’s put senators in the uncomfortable position of defending — or choosing not to defend — breaks with powerful constituencies. Many lawmakers have said they’re reluctant to play ball, worried about picking winners or losers and concerned that those choices might later be held against them."

Now, that makes a little bit of sense. Though it still pisses me off that our politicians are careerists who are more afraid of powerful constituencies, and about "picking winners or losers," than they are about making this country stronger.

Absolutely ridiculous, this information should be available to the public.

Really makes you wander what they are trying to hide.

I'm not sure if I should stay out of a US tax topic as a non-American, but I feel that what happens in the US often spreads elsewhere fast.

Kinda stupid, really. You'll find out the changes once you pay the bills. If this is their way of saying they don't need to explain why they tax you, it may be a bit more disconcerting than the empty lipservice they provided in the past, but little really changed.

One thing that this tax secrecy might serve, is the beneficiaries of the IRS. Then it isn't about what is being taxed and why, but rather about where the tax money goes after collection. Federal Income Tax is technically not lawful, because it's not added to the state treasury afterwards, but rather it's used to pay the debt the US gov't owes to the Federal Reserve Bank. America *borrows* its printed bank notes from FRB, which is a private owned company. It's completely illegal, but it was brought into existence secretively around 1914. Now that the US is borrowing exorbitant amounts of money from it, I'm guessing there isn't enough gold to back up the loans anymore. These confidental proposals may document how state utilities and other essentials are now being bartered off to FRB owners, and this is then classified as "tax proposals".
This is wishful thinking; to assume that it would be any different if the other party were in power. Neither party is universally acknowledged for its honesty. Democrats are hypocritical sellouts, and the GOP is a bunch of self-justifying sellouts. If you let this notion console you, nothing will change.

I think it should be public and I would point out that it seems what is being kept secret is the tax breaks that will be kept.
