Howdy, I'm not sure anyone is still left on this forum or if I'll ever get a reply, but its worth a shot.

like most I recently dug up my copy of Baldur's gate the original.

I have the old 5 disc sleeve that has a slot for tales of the sword coast.
and like the rest on here, I have Xp.

my problem is whenever I attempt to install baldur's gate.
nothing happens, no error or anything. Launcher comes up, click install... and nothing.. just dissapears.

I am not terribly adept at computers, but I can find my way around if directed. If anyone can think of something to fix this problem, it would be greatly appreciated.

It's a quite forum, but not completely empty. I myself don't have much experience with installation issues (and i don't have the 5 CD version, but the 4-in-1 box and both my xp desktop and vista laptop run bg well), but the first thing you might try is open the disc itself in the explorer window and open the setup.exe file on the first disc directly. You don't really need the launcher.

Had the game been previously installed on this computer?

If so I suspect it was not properly de-installed. Try running a registry cleaner like the one in CCleaner, or open your registry, search for Baldur's Gate, and delete everything you find.
