I've recently installed a new graphic card (NVidia G-Force 8500 GT... I think) and now I have problems with graphics in IWD of all things.

My old card was NVidia G-Force six thousand and something... - My brother handles these stuff, I just play.

I have IWD, HoW, TotL - (vanilla game, basically), but since I installed the card the fog of war sometimes gets squared up, and what is worse, whenever a NPC talks (little white sentences over their heads, not in dialogue), a big black square appears around that place. I can read what they say, but I don't see them.

I fiddled around with the in-game graphic controls, with no result. (32bit depth, and "enable this if there are graphic issues" button.)

I assume the problem is with the new card being installed, I might be updating its drivers soon.

Some other (newer) games work just fine.

So, any suggestions guys? Is this a driver issue or something different?

    Thank you. :)

I'd say definitely a driver issue. Did you (or your brother) install the latest drivers after installing the card? This can be a problem for older games that don't like recent drivers, and unfortunately there's not much you can do about this.

Alternatively, if you didn't uninstall the old drivers before installing the new ones, the problem could stem from components of both driver versions interacting with each other in some weird spaghetti-like fashion. In that case you'd need some utility (Nvidia used to have one on their site) that completely wipes the drivers, then reinstall the new drivers.

    Thanks, Ziad.

I'm pretty sure my brother removed the old card drivers, so the new drivers issue is the most likely answer. I'll see if his driver update does anything.

If all else fails, I'll just take the saves to my laptop, and play from there. All my IE games are on it anyway.

But it's good to know what the problem is.

    Thanks again.:)

This is becoming a common issue. I have it too and I have an 8xxx series Nvidia card. The solution? Turn color depth down to 16-bit. Honestly, my eyes don't notice a major downgrade in color quality and you get regular looking text.

Actually, I tried with 16-bit too, no improvement. The squares are still there. The text itself looks ok, but I can't see anything except it. :)

Let us know if the driver update fixes the issue. I'm actually curious what's causing this.

A few months late... but it's finally fixed.

    The drivers update didn't help.

    However, earlier today:

In IWD Configuration, I picked the resolution: Unsupported, 1024x728 and activated "Use Open GL 3D acceleration". Playing Fullscrean, 32bit.

The black squares are gone! The game is back to normal.

(I have installed the widescreen mod from G3 today (which I mostly took for PS:T reasons) and applied it to HoW. I tried the game one more time, out of curiosity. I don't know if the mod had anything to do with solving this problem, or not, but I mention it since I have installed it and now the game works... better safe then sorry :) )

    Thanks for the help, everyone.

For me the solution was turning off Direct3D in dxdiag. Works for IWD1 and 2 and BG1. I have a 8800GTX card.
