Okay, I'm getting bored with just playing the same kind of party (usually a couple of tanks, healer, thief and mage) so I want to branch out a bit and try new things. I'm going to be playing through the entire saga (easytutu and normal soa/tob) with a custom made party.

My first idea was to use 6 characters all of the one class, just to see how they would fair without supporting classes. I thought of using an all paladin party and focusing on melee tanking. I was also thinking of an all thief party and having fun with backstabbing.

Anyways, thoughts and comments on the difficulty of playing such a party or advice on what mods to use in the line of kits would be appreciated very much.

An all thief party would be fun. Just using the vanilla game, I might create such a party like this:

-SC Swashbuckler - great ac and fighting skill
-MC Fighter/Thief - good warrior with effective backstab
-MC Fighter/Thief/Mage - back up mage, who is a decent fighter with access to a wide range of weapons.
    -MC Thief/Cleric - Healer
    -DC Swashbuckler10/mage - primary caster
-DC Berserker13/thief - main tank, sword and board type character who can gain grandmastery in weapons

I'm sure others can come up with more effective combos, but I'm pretty sure I could make that party work.

A bounty hunter would be a cool addition as well, as they are excellent with laying traps

An all paladin party might be interesting, though certainly challenging due to not having access to spells like breach, though the inquisitor's dispel would help in a lot of situations.

You mean no DC or MC? In that case the game would be like a solo only harder (1 high level character is more powerful than 6 lower levels characters, except at the very beginning of the game).

The Paladin party would require much less micromanaging on your part while the Thief party would force you to rely on backstabbing and specialize.
Since the number of traps is capped you might not want more than two thieves with this ability maxed out at first.
The poison ability would work wonders with ranged attacks after the backstabs.
Not to forget the fact that a Swashbuckler can be (especially at higher levels) a decent tank.

I believe the all-thief party would be more fun. Paladins are just point and click and later in the game buff point and click.

I was leaning towards no DC or MC, but I guess I wouldnt mind at least one part cleric in there. I was also thinking of taking a bard along with the thief party (as they are kinda thieves as well) in order to get the experience for scribing scrolls in BG2, as the experience from that really builds up.
I might try something along these lines:

    - Assassin
    - Bounty Hunter
    - Swashbuckler
    - Skald
    - Thief/Cleric
    - Sharpshooter (mod kit) or something else

There would be a bit of melee power in that paty with the skald and swashbuckler. Limited arcane power I'll admit, but I can get around that.

    Not sure about weapons though.
I'll probably use katanas, longswords, shortswords and daggers as the main weapon choices. Hmm, might even include the holy avenger in there for when the swashbuckler gets UAI, seeing as he cant backstab.

    Hello and good days,

Actually there are many suggesions on this one.

    1. You can try going solo for both games. I am going solo for bg2\tob right now with the darkest day mod. There are some pretty aspects to this type of playing. First of all I was feeling bad about killing one nasty guy with six people, or about one nasty guy killing six party members. Now things will get reversed you will destroy six powerful types by yourself which will make you feel more like a bhaalspawn. Tink about it why every member of "the five" should be stronger than you.

There is also one more thing and it is that this is more challenging. It will always be difficult at first but later on it gets better.

I am running a kensai/mage but people are using ranger/cleric, thief/mage, berserker/mage, only mage (wild too), only sorcerer and so forth... There are many options.

I also did some little modifications myself, which is not quite cheating. You can roll many times with your dice to get a total of 88 points. which is enough for anything by the help of items you can get your favourite stats to 18 or more. Or use shadow keeper.

Another modification by me is that I made a book of unlocking (book of infinite spells mod) with 20 charges daily and glasses of ID with 20 charges. (you can memeorize these spells and rest and ID or unlock but pfff...).

Anyways this is fun and challenging as long as you do not modify too much.

    2. Another option is of course a 6 mage or 6 sorcerer party. If you are into spell casting I suggest 2 wild mages and 4 sorcerers. I did not play with such a party but I gave some xp to them and wondered some areas. Sorcerers cause the havoc, mages protect (or change gender :) ) and it is very colorfull. Especially if you cast six time stops at a time and six simulacrums or so :) . You will blow your head with magic selection and strategy but it will not be a problem.

I also liked the 6 thieves option but you will need many invisibility potions I guess.

Do not take it personal but I did not like the 6 paladins option because i do not like paladins, and 6 of them will be too much pompousness and holyness around the place. And there are not enough carsomyrs around.

    3. And of course these are the simplest options. 6 of the same and only one. Other combinations are many. But you can rest assured that soloing, or 2wm and 4sorc will get you through the game(and i really liked this second idea).

    4. I have done my suggestions except that I did not play bg1 and do not intend to do so. I heard many times it can get on your nerves, so I cannot consider its difficulty. One thing I know is that you can solo bg1, there are people who have done that, But I cannot know about the spellcaster madness party, I guess that you will have troubles with that.

I apologize that I wrote this much, I get carried over sometimes.

    Thanks

Ive tried an all mage party before, and didnt find it that great as they became too powerful too quick. I have had a bit of a play round with the thief party i detailed before and I am finding it quite good so far. each one if focusing in one of the thieve skills and is really paying off as i was able to get the star sapphire in Winthrops inn cause i had one person dedicated to opening locks, instead of spreading the points around.

The bounty hunter has become a great trap layer as well. That ogre with the belts got hammered by 2 different traps and went down quickly.

Or an all short people party? Pick surly dwarves, naughty halflings and innocent gnomes and have fun!

Hmm, might give that small person party a go, seeing as i normally use humans or elves. But not yet, as this thief party is just too much fun. I never really appreciated how good the set trap ability was until now, especially with a bounty hunter. I now prefer those traps over fireballs and skull traps as it deals decent damage and screws the enemies over pretty well, and can be thrown a good distance.

I have another question for you, but this one relates to IWD2. How effective would a party like this be in IWD2? I can see it working reasonably well with the sneak attacks as usually when a thief uses a sneak attack, the enemy focuses on him and prevents him doing it again. But with an all thief party, when the enemy shifts focus to another party member, the party member who he was targeting before will get a free cheap shot, with the rest of the party getting them too. But would this be effective or am I overlooking something?

A party I want to try someday is a "nature party", by that I mean Druids + Rangers, i.e. no arcane... Probably a real challenge, but could be interesting, especially if you mix in the Auramaster kit.
It would still be tough with no arcane, but it could be kind of cool ;) :
3 rangers kits and 3 Druids kits, or rangers and fighter/druids, and druids, or even add-in a Cleric/ranger for extra punch...

I like the all nature party idea elric, it sounds challenging but with enough tactical orientation to see it through. I don't think I'd be able to do any of the others, I mean all warrior would get boring (too hack n slash), mage would be way too easy as soon as they get lvl 9 spells (I mean just about every battle could be won by either 6 dragon breaths or 6 timestop+energy blades) and all thief sounds tedious to me (I find backstabbing with one thief tedious...and I played a p&p thief).

Good luck with the thief party True Blue, with a bit of preperation 5 backstabs in a row would be awesome. Keep us posted on the more difficult battles and how you beat em!

yeah it would be a good challenge (all nature party), I guess you would need a thief as well for traps and stuff... What could a "Nature Thief" be?

An all thief party would repeatedly remember us the death of Ceasar won't it? 6 invisible thieves backstabbing Irenicus :) really funny.

    Et tu thief #4

Time for a bit of an update I guess. I just cleared out the cloakwood mines with the thieves. It really has required different tactics, but I am finding it a pretty good change. I dont think I have ever found Daeveron (or however it is spelt) so easy though. Just hid a thief in each of the places that I know he appears after using dimension door, then got rid of his mirror images with a magic missle from the bard. Really quite funny how he thought to escape to attack from another side, only to cop another blade to the ribs.
