Just curious to know if there are any other people in the military lurking around here or if I'm the only one??

Isn't it voluntary in US? :hmm:

    If not...

Actually, I'm tempted to say "Ha-ha!" even if it is voluntary.

Needless to say, I have a profound dislike for all things military, including the people who actually volunteer to go there.

    Sorry Arahar :D

(half-joking, so don't take it personally. No offense meant!)

I spent a grueling 10 months doing compulsory military service. Made me question anyone who do it voluntarily. :)

I know there are a few other militaries here. Ragusa has something to do with the military and Grovflab have done several UN tours.

@Arahar, a lot of the people here are or were required to join their country's military for a few months or even a few years.

I wish I was one of them...the US military doesn't want me. I hate asthma! :bang:

I have 4 friends that are in different areas in the US Military, but all have really cool jobs:
    • My best friend is in the Army, and is in Iraq fixing Hummers, trucks, and any other large diesel engine based vehicle.
    • His sister who is also in the Army, is in Colorado refueling Apache Helicopters
    • A friend from work is in the Marines, and is a M1 Abrams tank driver, and is training to replace an unit already in Iraq for about a year starting this Jan.
    • And another friend from work is in the Ntl. Guard...he's currently a PSC (private 2nd class), but wants to eventually be a pilot or a gunner in an Apache Helicopter.
I wanted to be a pilot for the USAF, and hopefully get to fly an F-16, an F-22, or possibly the new JSF (Joint Strike Fighter)...is that too much to ask?

Oh and Arahar, what branch of the millitary are you in? :rolling:

I always wanted to join the military, but I am half-blind and half-deaf so I couldn't tell if it was a talibani or my drill-sergeant who I just shot, or could I :p

Why didn't you say this four years ago? I would be glad to give you my place. :D
Seriously now since you suffer from asthma, you would be only be allowed to do an unarmed service here, so there is no reason to feel dissapointment.

Even if it is mandatory, you can refuse. I have always wondered how it would be as a outlaw, only my old, trusty Bertha and me versus the world... Well, namely blue-coats and their dogs, but Bertha could have both before leaving the country. I have always wanted to travel too, and have wondered how it would be to shoot someone. :)

Well, as Joacqin wrote above, I've spent my time in the military! It all started with the conscription 3 years age. 12 months serving in the Royal Guards, including 4 months of guard duty at the royal palaces. Let me just say, that I really hate japanese tourists!

The involuntary period was a real hell. Thankfully, everything got better when I went on to get a contract. Thus I'm serving as a reservist in the Danish International Brigade. This means I'm only activated for service in the military when I'm about to go out on a mission, which is also what I've been doing these last two years....

So far I've put two missions behind me, although none of those were UN missions. I don't think I have the temper to be an UN trooper...

The missions I've done so far are Kosovo in 2003 and Iraq here in 2004. That is for half a year both, starting feb and ending aug. There are some pictures from both in the sorcerers place picture thingy...

To be more specific, my current rank is Konstable or private. I'm part of a mechanized infantry compagny, and in my section, I'm the gunner on a Carl Gustav recoil-less gun. To those of you who are not military, think bazooka anno 2004!

Well, I'll let that be it for now....

For Greece? I don't think so. Now that I think of it, the only military I would want to join outside of the USA would probably be the RAF.

Going back to my previous reply, the best way to make fun of them, is just to yell in a deep voice, "Corpral, bend over!" :rolling:

My cousin Jesse is a Ranger, but he's off-duty at the moment - he was in Iraq for six months, but returned a little while back. I might join the military if my goals in the field of law don't work out.

I wouldn't be able to join if I wanted to; asthma aswell. Though I never really planned to join I would be able to. My brother wanted to join but he also has asthma and isn't allowed. Meh, c'est la vie.

    We are all humans.
We don't respect rules unless the are backed up with physical sanctions or as some call it: reprimands.
Force is a sadly a necessity.

Hah! From all that I've heard (and that's from Swedes) the Swedish military service is a joke. ;)

Finland has a long tradition of compulsory military service and even though I'd rather be without it I realize that it's really the only way our country can hope to defend itself. Personally I'll be going to the army next year.

Morgoroth, it wasnt really that it was all that tough even if the first two months were rather tough but that it was horribly boring and mind numbing. I spent the last seven months as a guard at a military head quarter where I pressed a button to open the doors. I sat there twelve hours a day for seven days in a row.

Every male up my tree seems to have been a soldier. Father wasn't because he wouldn't serve in a commie army (Poland here, commie regime till 1989). I don't plan to become one, even though I've been mistaken for a military officer by people and between my friends popular jokes involve me and military intelligence / covert ops. I don't want to do compulsory service because of social reasons (the kind of socialising that doesn't appeal to me, plus my tolerance for jock types and brutal folks is short), and officers after military university aren't paid well. Actually, I do have asthma, allergies, some problems with the heart and the spine, strong glasses etc etc, but they gave me the top health category, so I could use it to get to a military uni if I wanted.
