Masterwork items, what's the big deal??

    In various forums I've read about the availability of masterwork items. I seen them at various vendors and even went on a quest to be able to get them from the smith in Hommlet. From what I've seen there is no difference between regular and masterwork items. same damage and range, same defense etc. Are these just a way to rid the party of excess gold or what?

    You need a masterwork weapon if you plan on casting any enchantments.

    By PnP rules, they give a +1 to hit. I assume it's the same in the game, as the ruleset is pretty faithful.

    Yes, it is indeed implemented that way in ToEE (you can verify by clicking the Hit/Miss text in the combat rolls box). On top of that, Masterwork armor and shields get one less armor check penalty point.

    Masterwork items also are, as previously mentioned, fairly prized for their crafting potential.
