I just stumbled upon Lareth, "The Master", and he offers to join and show us a secret passage to the temple. I've let him join, but I'm not sure if that was wise. The party is basically "good" and I'm pretty sure he is evil. Any opinions on this?

Also, it appears that I've found the passage way before any of the other quests have been completed....did anyone else do that? I need to go back and do the first quests in the town. (I'm in the MoatHouse, btw.)

Most of the 'first quests' in town have little to nothing to do with the Temple. They're just window dressing for the module.

There are many ways to learn the whereabouts of the Temple, so don't worry about it. You didn't find it 'early', so to speak ;) The module (and hence the game) is very non-linear. And unlike the BG games, there is no right or wrong way to do things, although the outcomes of some choices may seem better than others. The best approach is to try and learn what you can, and then go with it.

As for Lareth....he insulted my party when they were 'considering' his offer to join. His mistake :p

Thanks Gnolyn! I've let him join for now - 2 clerics are always better than one (especially mine :shake: ). I'll probably go back and do some of those quests.

Your reputation changes permanently when you've had Lareth in your party, even if he's only there for a few minutes before getting kicked out.

Also, if you have a paladin in your party, letting Lareth join the party will cause her to become a fallen paladin - and that doesn't change when you kick him out again.

I allowed Lareth to join my neutral party with no ill effect other than tarnishing my reputation.
he's a strong cleric and very handy to have around.

Sprite.....What's the effect of a tarnished reputation? The party is CG and I don't see any effects either way so far. How can I tell if my party's alignment has been changed?

Your alignment doesn't change. But you get an assortment of reputations (they are listed in your logbook) that affect how different factions in town react to you. I'm not sure the exact effect of having Lareth the Dark Hope of Lolth in your party (I whacked him), but I am sure a lot of nice types will be less nice to you.

[IMG] Lareth ain't beautiful no more! He's a dried up corpse by now...If he stayed where I left him. But I DID pick up that hill giant for a while!!!! Nothing better than thumping through low-level critters with that tank!

    The only downside: Spoiler coming....

The merchants won't barter with you if you bring the giant to town.

    P.S. I LOVE the item/weapon/scroll/wand/potion creation feats!!!!!

The hill giant was Scorp, the one with the worg pet in the lower Temple area. My rogue asked him to join, and he did. The only reason I dumped him was because everyone in town was afraid of him!

I picked up Otis for a half second! He brings so many weapons and extra armor he's encumbered all the time!!!

well, you can take him to another merchant and sell that junk. However, he is still pretty slow even with all of it sold. He also only travels with you for a limited number of excursions. Having him join your party also seems to mess up his function as a store (he still buys stuff once he's out of the party, but his original inventory seems gone).

Although Otis is high level, I think you are much better off with the other fighter options out there. I use Fruella, Elmo, and Wonnilon.

[IMG] What class is Fruella? I mean, other than a sqawking harpy?

I thought about taking Meleny along with me, but decided she was better off at Hommlet.

Hey! That's not a nice way to refer to the old battleaxe! :p

She's a fighter. She specialises in battleaxe and has very good stats, at least by D&D standards.

She is indeed a very good fighter. And she takes it very personally when her husband gets KOed by bad guys. I am very pleased to have her in my party.

Of course, its nice that my Ironman party's cleric of Kord has an Int 7, Cha 5 and so doesn't mind being married to the War Harridan of Doom. :)

You can marry her to someone with a CHA of 5? Good to know. I first tried to marry her to my wizard, who I'd forgotten was a gnome, and she told him in this really shocked voice, "you're really not very attractive!"

So she may be a bit racist but at least she doesn't seem to mind "hit with an ugly stick". :p

OK, stupid question: Where IS this Fruella? Her parents were bent on marrying her off to one of my characters, but I've no idea where she's hiding.

uhh, she's the "spinster" standing right next to her father.

And the my cleric of Kord isn't ugly, he's just really shy. :) Also, she had various excuses like "did my father put you up to this" and "I demand a church wedding!" before she agreed.

however, I do think it needs to be a human character, though you could try an elf or half elf.

    Lareth just seemed too...gay.

Before any bashing begins, let it be known that my stance on homosexuality is entirely ambivalent. Each to their own, I say!

Anyway, from a RPing point of view, there is no way my brilliant and diabolical evil-overlord wanna-be PC will suffer the presence of such an ineffectual and pompous fool. Hence he gets a mace cracked over his skull and a greatsword shoved through his ribs, no matter how much he pleads.

I would like to ask if there are any evil fighters for hire that will loot only gold. Can somebody please enlighten me?
