    *WARNING SPOILERS AHEAD*

It happened when i was on a quest for the Grey Fox. He told me i could kill the target, but only outside the castle walls, which wasn't too much of a problem since the mage in question was hiding in his tower outside the city, that could only be reached by his secret passages. After i killed him, i got a message, telling me i was suspended from the Mages guild. Thanks a bunch mr Fox.

My question is: is it worth the trouble to get restored as a member of the Mages, or is being a member of their guild overrated ?

I mean, they're sending me on a quest to collect 20 Daedra hearts and 20 Vampire dust. The hearts won't be a problem, i can reach those numbers easily by raiding one Oblivion gate, but how on earth will i find 20 Vampire dust ? I'm currently at level 29, and so far i have only encountered a handful of vampires. Are there so few of em in Cyrodil or am i not looking in the right places ? I'd appreciate it if anyone could point me in the direction of a few vampire hideouts.

You have to be a member of the mage guild if you want to enchant your own gear create your own spells.

There are quite a few vampires wandering the sewers. There's also the Order of Sacred Blood (or something) that involves a lot of vampires, and the quest for the Azura shrine.

I have already done the order of the sacred blood quest, and that was way before this was even relevant, so i used the Vampire dust i collected for one of my homemade brews (alchemy is one of my main skills, so i use basically anything). I haven't done Azura's quest though so i'll check that out right away. So far i have collected the required 20 Daedra hearts, but i've only found 4 Vampire dust so far, so there's still a long way to go.
