IWD2 'Abnormal Program Termination'

    Hello everybody,
    Icewind Dale 2 has been the most difficult game I have ever tried to run, ESPECIALLY from GOG.
    I won't get into my issues with Windows 8.1, but I now have 7 (pro, I think) on my laptop, and this is what happened:
    Installed, made a single character and began a new game just to ensure the game was working. It went through the opening cinematic and began the game fine. No lag, no problem.
    Day later, went back, imported the original character and made a full party. Received the error message 'runtime error' then it specifies the filepath for the .exe, then it says what it says it my subject line: abnormal program termination. I checked forums and they suggested that this was an issue with character importing, so I uninstalled, re-downloaded, re-installed, made the party from scratch and I'm still getting the error. I tried a pre-made party before creating my own after the re-install and that did not work either.
    I have submitted a ticket to GOG, but I thought I would check this forum as well. And, though I usually find GOG to be great, they never did resolve my 8.1 issue (a completely different bug), so I'm a little wary this time around.
    I have many other infinity games downloaded from GOG and all run without issue (and ran without issue on 8.1.) It' s just IW2. Looking back, I wish I'd bought the first game instead of buying the sequel.
    If anyone has any ideas at all, I'd appreciate it. According to my searches, it seems like a surprisingly rare error...

    I haven't experimented with IWD2 on Windows 7/8, but this sounds familiar from XP.
    I have some general suggestions for game issues with Vista and later however.
    First, try running the game in compatibility mode for Windows 98. Make sure you set the compatibility mode for ALL the .exe files in the Icewind Dale directory, especially IWD2.exe
    Second, you should try reinstalling the game into a different folder than \program files (x86).
    Try opening the root directory of the hard drive (computer -> C:bad:), make a new folder called "games", and alter the permissions so that authenticated users have full control over the games folder.
    Install Icewind Dale there, and make sure users can modify things in that folder.
    Again, make sure you run it in compatibility mode. You can try Windows XP (service pack 2) or 2000, and if those fail, try Windows 98.
