Seems to me to be a bit of an internet sting, but I entered a competition thing unknowingly from a link here at SP (I think it was somewhere in the "your stats" thread to find your IQ) and wrote a poem while sitting there in front of the computer. It took me 10 minutes tops and now its a semi-finalist in some competition in which I can win $1000 large (the sting bit, we've all seen this comps), as well as instant publishing in a book. The second part to the sting was that they offer you a chance to buy the book for a small fee of $50 and chances to buy multiple copies, as well as an opportunity to get your own authors comment. Anyway, I'm not buying the book, but hey, I'm getting published!

    That's cool, B.

Be careful with some of those places, though. They're called "vanity publications" and they'll try a million different ways to get money out of you: Buy the book, buy a framed copy of your poem, buy your poem as a greeting card, etc. I did one through poetry.com (I think), and they kept sending me different solicitations until I moved and left no forwarding address.

Ahh, but I don't intend to BUY the book. That's where B's cleverness comes in. He takes the kudos from being an published poet, but doesn't pay the 50 dollars. He finds the said book in a book cafe frequented by yuppies and buys it from them once the coffee stains make the book illegible. Smart, eh?

Plus, I'm not ordering anything anymore. I have been screwed like this before.
