Never done this, just wondering: can a player target a lich (maybe even an SCS lich) with a green scroll of Protection from Magic? Will that strip the lich of all its magical defenses and inflict 100% casting failure on it? If so, one can then just gang up on the lich in melee.

Or is the dispel coming from the Protection from Magic scroll cast as a low-level Dispel Magic/Remove Magic spell and thus won't affect liches? (In SCS, such dispels won't even go through a possible Spell Immunity: Abjuration).

Given the rarity of such scrolls, I'm not asking whether this is a feasible strategy, only whether it's possible.

I can't speak of EE as I haven't gotten around to playing EE in a year. However I can speak for the original.
The scroll pretty much renders liches nearly helpless in the original. Kangax still needs +4 weapons to hurt which are in short supply (hammer of thunderbolts, staff of rynn), but can't hurt you, nor can the lich in the Twisted Rune. However Protection from Undead spells are just as effective as protection from magic spells against liches.
In the Twisted Rune however, using a protection from magic spell on a warrior might be more worthwhile since there are more baddies as the rest of the party can try to retreat or go invisible (although I think at least one member has a scripted True Sight so that probably won't work) while the warrior wails away on them.
