Well, the Elder Brains got theyr shar damn mirror, so they won't be siding the Valsharess. Am i ever gonna need to come there again, or is it ok if i sack theyr colony now for loot and ex-- err, i mean to keep the illithids' power in check?

If the treaty with you doesn't work, the game will let you know by updating your journal accordingly. For example, this happens if you side with the slaves (SPOILER: that's still not irreversible). In my game, I chopped them into pieces after freeing the slaves. The game can still be finished if you need to face the illithids later on. I suppose some people have finished the game having to face more of those Valsharess allies than just the illithids. Hint: if you're able to loot and burn the whole colony along with the elder brain, they aren't really that much of a formidable opponent, are they? They aren't such complete suckers but pitiable most of the time.

When I played, the illithids did not even let me talk to them at all as they were all red right from the start, so I had no choice but to kill them all.

But now that i gave them the mirror, won't it be impossible for me to reach the Elder brain again?
And what slaves were you referring to?

    Harbourboy:
Maybe you weren't wearing a Helmet of Shielding when you entered the colony?

not get the helmet off the duergar slaver at the enterance?

but anyway illithids and beholders are real weaklings in HotU, the drow are far harder then the two "greatest" powers of the Underdark, best put them out of their misery and hope their virtual souls find their ways back to BG2 where they're still reasonably tough as you reach level 20.
