Is there a point in the game where you REALLY need one?

Funny I find I want to have a thief more often than anybody else in general. I am not sure what you are really asking when do you absolutely need any particular class? Yea a warrior, mage, or cleric could make things so much easier and are best in their own niche but when do you absolutely need any one of them.

Heck I have heard of people doing solo games with thieves, clerics, and mages (and I bet there are people that have done warriors too but I do not have a specific example of that right now). Best solo thief is the bounty hunter from my experience.

Durlag's Tower is a bitch without a thief, but other than that, not so much.

I was basically referring to their special skill sets like find traps or lock picking.

That's pretty much it for Durlag's, yes. Obviously they especially come in handy in other trap-infested places as well, of which there are quite a few. Crossing traps that you can't disarm at low levels and continuously taking damage can result in death in many instances very fast, especially if you have an entire party to worry about. Going without a thief would be a major pain in the ass so I don't see why you'd want to attempt it, unless you want to go solo?

Solo was my go, yes. I'm just thinking if I should "carry" one around for certain moments

You can do durlag's without a thief if your strength score is high enough - you won't be able to unlock everything even with 25 strength, but should be able to progress as normal anyway, just losing out on some loot.
If your character is an arcane caster, you'll be able to buy the knock spell at sorcerous sundries in baldur's gate, which will take care of most if not all lockpicking needs.

Traps are still gonna be a b*tch though.
