I've wanted to write my very own novel novel for some time now, but I've had to debate with myself whether it's a sufficiently unique concept to merit the effort of actually attempting it.

Basically, the structure for this story is inspired by my own interest in psychic phenomena (I'm not much of a believer, but I find it interesting nonetheless), and also in Arthur Koestler.

In this fictional world, an individual comes to the London Parapsychological Foundation (LPF), a small institution that performs research into psychic phenomena in the mid-80s . This individual shows control of several forms of psychic phenomena, including psychokinesis, telepathy, and clairvoyance. The results garnered from these experiments show beyond reasonable doubt that psychic powers are a reality; In the light of these results, the government establishes government-funded facilities around the country to contuinue research and also hopefully help people develop their own abilites to help the community.

However, after 12 years many of the institutes are closed, due to the fact that it becomes apparant that they are only a waste of taxpayer's money, as, statistically, about 5% of the population of Britain is or is capable of becoming psychically active, and only 2% develop abilities powerful enough to actually be considered an asset to society. The individual who sparked the whole thing has since gone into seclusion, having their personal details destroyed and eliminating them from everythhing but the memory of a few.

I intend to have the story focus on a freelance detective with postcognitive and clairvoyant abilities( which, of course, aid his investigations immensely), and his attempts to find a deranged, psychically active criminal, which takes place in the modern day.

In my mind's eye I see the story as a combination of the classic film noir detective story and a tale of supernatural horror, as the detective (the name I'm considering right now is James Crowley) is forced to put himself in the shoes of a true monster, and experience the terror that a human mind can unleash from the depths of their own psyche.

It sounds original to me ... but who cares? If you're inspired to write it - write it already...

A lot has been written about the paranormal.

Originality is in how you develop your characters and story.

The artist/writer creates because he needs to create.

James Crowley? What's the significance of that reference?

It may or may not be a viable idea for a book. Worse ideas have been put onto paper.

Well, none, really. I just like the name. Although Aleister Crowley was an occultist in the early 20th century.
