    Geneforge 1 - Mutagen Review

Nearly 20 years after the release of Geneforge 1 to Macs, Jeff Vogel has done a bit of gene-forging himself and rewritten all the little scrolls that made up that CRPG classic. Updated for contemporary machines and audiences, Geneforge 1 - Mutagen is a remaster of the first game in the Geneforge series, bringing in new mechanics, new stories, and high-resolution graphics.

In Mutagen you play a "Shaper", a member of the controlling sociopolitical class whose might is predicated on their ability to create life from a magical-organic substance called Essence.

Having been sent out on your first mission as an apprentice, you are shipwrecked on a restricted island after a foreign vessel shoots down your living boat. Quickly after arriving, you discover a series of canisters of goop with syringe-like needles on top - and using them to inject yourself grants you magical power far beyond what you had access to back on the mainland.

Newly juiced and ready to party, your tasks are three-fold: discover why Sucia Island was restricted (or "Barred" in Shaper-speak), find out who shot your ship and what they want from you, and figure out what's going on with the three sects of Serviles who have been living on the island since Sucia was abandoned.

    [...]

    SUMMARY
Mutagen is a thorough rework, update, and expansion of the CRPG classic Geneforge 1. Extensive mechanical reworks, combined with a contemporary UI, grid combat system, and increased graphical fidelity have spruced G1 up to the standards of contemporary play, and have preserved the excellent story and concepts of G1 for many years to come.

    Score: 9/10
