During my first playthrough, i chose to take Dougal Gavorn's offer because I've learned (from David Gaider!) that you can refuse to pay him back[1].

However, after starting act II, I learned that Hawke already paid what he owed (50 gold, the initial amount + 50 gold interest) and that Dougal was trying to get more than what was agreed upon.

Has anyone tried doing the expedition both with and without accepting Gavorn's offer and compared the amount of cash at the start of act 2?

Yes. You end up with the same amount of gold as you had before paying both ways. It's not really a choice at all really.

Why not have that offer right in the beginning of the game? All of Act I could have been skipped.

    What Omnigodly said.

There's no reason not to take the offer, as you can splash more money in act 1 if you have a hard time getting all the tomes/elixirs.

Are you looking for DA2 to be shorter than it already is?? :p

I guess Gavvorn is put in as a fail safe in the event that someone blows all their cash. I suppose you don't meet him at the beginning of act I because he doesn't yet know about you to make the offer (and so that Act I can consist of more than the Deep Roads).
